theodp writes "Alleging that Cryst al Decisions willfully infringes on its patents for asynchronous control of report generation using a web browser, management of an automatic OLAP report broadcast system, and providing business intelligence web content with reduced client-side processing, MicroStrategy has filed a lawsuit seeking treble damages, attorneys' fees, and an injunction preventing Crystal from making, using, or selling Crystal Reports. The lawsuit comes just a day before an $800 million merger of Crystal Decisions and MicroStrategy rival Business Objects is supposed to close, and only a week after MicroStrategy was granted one of the patents in question."

Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PM
I think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is that Adobe, who is no stranger to abusing intellectual property rules, is now being hit with a patent over their PDF technology. The patent is for a method of extracting network information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and having the system not only download the page in question, but all locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with PDF files.

Seagate Files Lawsuit over Trade Secrets

Seagate Files Lawsuit over Trade Secrets 08/06/2004 09:57 PM
Seagate Technology has filed a complaint in a Minnesota court attempting to prevent one of its ex-employees from joining Western Digital, a competitor.Pete Goglia recently left Seagate Technology LLC to join Western Digital Corp., where he will lead that company's read/write head development after serving at Seagate for 16 years. Seagate is attempting to block the hire, claiming that Goglia will not be able to avoid disclosing Seagate confidential information and trade secrets in the course of his new job.

"This is a situation in which one of our competitors has recently acquired the read/write head assets from a bankrupt supplier, and has stated their need to strengthen their capabilities in that technology," Dave Wickersham, Seagate's chief operating officer, said in a statement released late Friday. "We do not wish to impugn Mr. Goglia, but only to ensure that Western Digital does not build its new recording head capabilities with Seagate trade secrets."

Apple files lawsuit over Internet leak
of new products
12/19/2004 02:50 PM
Apple Computer Inc. is suing anonymous people who leaked details about new products by posting information on the Internet, Reuters is reporting today. According to Reuters, Apple said in the seven-page civil complaint which it filed on December 13 that it did not know the "true names or capacities, whether individual, associate, corporate or otherwise," of the defendants. Once they have been discovered, the Cupertino, California-based company said it would amend the complaint. The complaint alleges that “an unidentified individual, acting alone or in concert with others, has recently misappropriated and disseminated through Web sites confidential information about an unreleased Apple product. To succeed, Apple must develop innovative products and bring those products to market in advance of its competitors. If Apple competitors were aware of Apple's future production information, those competitors could benefit economically from that knowledge by directing their product development or marketing to frustrate Apple's plans.” "Apple has filed a civil complaint against unnamed individuals who we believe stole our trade secrets and posted detailed information about an unannounced Apple product on the Internet," the company said in a statement provided to Reuters. "Apple's DNA is innovation and the protection of our trade secrets is crucial to our success."

Intermec Sees Symbol's Revenge Patent
Lawsuit, And Piles On Another For Spite
03/25/2005 06:57 AM
And people thought the idea the idea that companies were getting patents for the sake of nuclear stockpiling was silly? Well, it appears that nuclear war is now breaking out between Symbol and Intermec. Last year, Intermec started the fun by suing a bunch of companies, including Symbol, for supposedly violating some RFID patents. Two weeks ago, Symbol thought it was only fair to sue Intermec over its own WiFi patents. Because no fired shot can go unanswered, the good lawyers at Intermec have now come up with more RFID patents they can sue Symbol over. Or maybe they're the same ones and they're suing again. Honestly, it doesn't matter. All that's really happening here is that the two sides are wasting a ridiculous amount of money on lawyers and lawsuits -- when that money should be going towards new product development and getting products to market. At some point, the two sides will settle and there will be some press release about cross licensing patents and no one will be happy, except for some of the lawyers involved. All of this "innovating" (that's what patents are for, right?) is going to kill us all -- or, at least make a lot of this technology much more expensive.
