With every release of a cat-named OS, headline writers make sad attempts at word games based on this. Of course, there are only so many variations on a theme, and they get repeated ... often. Here's this year's.

Tiger has been:

Tiger also:

Commendable departures from repetition:

Display RSS Headlines on Your Own Site 10/29/2003 01:16 AM

Feedroll is a most excellent resource for displaying external headlines on your own web site. It's currently in beta, but there are several predefined sources (BBC News, Yahoo News, etc.), but best of all is the fact that you can enter the URL for almost any RSS feed to produce a snippet of Javascript code you can insert into any HTML page.

For example, by filling in a couple of boxes, you could get the code to display TSL headlines on your own pages like this:

Uncheck the "compact" box and you can get the full feed to display. A very nice service for those of us that love RSS but don't know all of the ins and outs of the specs! [via Lockergnome's RSS Resource]

(Hopefully the code won't kill any news aggregators....)

Mur der Most Foul? Yesterday, Dave Winer, the self-described "inventor of blogs", abruptly pulled the plug on 3000 blogs being hosted by weblogs.com, saying simply, "I can't afford to host these sites. I don't want to start a site hosting business. These are firm, non-negotiable statements." He's giving his hostees a couple of weeks to request an export of their site content, but they're otherwise S.O.L. Not surprisingly, some people are a little bent out of shape, particularly since the blogs just disappeared without any prior notice. (P.S. What happened to "Blogroots"?)

Deadwood enters into self-parody after
only one season, and other TV headlines!
04/03/2005 12:41 PM
Deadwood has become a self-parody at the very beginning of its second year, beating the previous record holder — 24 — by 4 episodes. Someone apparently told David Milch, the show's creator and writer, that he's brilliant at dialogue because everyone now speaks like a lead character in a Shakespearean drama, except for the poetry, and half the time I don't have any fucking idea what the fuck they're fucking talking fucking about. I find the show painful to watch and have only managed this far by thinking that maybe someone will remember that dialogue is supposed to: A. Express...

Truth Seizes Headlines Back From The
MPAA!

Truth Seizes Headlines Back From The
MPAA!
06/22/2005 02:17 AM
By now it should be no surprise that the MPAA likes to overhype lots of things, from the "losses" due to file sharing to the "risk" posed by the VCR ("the Boston Strangler" to the movie industry). The current bosses are no exception, from blami ng technology to dire warnings about the end of content, it pays to take most of what they say with an extra big grain of salt. Hopefully, you had that salt handy as you read an announcement trumpeted by the MPAA about how they, along with a "California High Tech Task Force" shut down a Southern California DVD processing plant seizing $30 million worth of DVDs. The implication, though not stated in the article, was that the plant was used to copy DVDs illegally. Perhaps the reason it wasn't stated was because it might not actually be true. Constitutional Code points to the processing plant company's angry response to the news today, suggesting that almost nothing in the MPAA's announcement was accurate. First off, the company claims they only copy legal DVDs, and are a well established (over 15 years in business) legal DVD and CD reproduction plant. Second, neither the MPAA nor the so-called High Tech Task Force "shut the plant down." After the raid was completed the plant was allowed to return to full production levels immediately. The Task Force did take some DVDs, but the plant believes they were perfectly legitimate DVDs being produced by a well-known public company. Finally, in the MPAA's favorite area, it looks like they completely inflated by ridiculous amounts the "value" of the seized materials. The plant claims that the DVDs taken were worth a grand total of $10,540. The DVD copying equipment seized was worth about $15,000. In other words, the claim of $30 million worth of product seized was exaggerated by a mere 2,000%. So, not only does it sound like they're lying, but they're bad at math as well. And yet, for some reason, we still think it's okay that they get to go into schools and push their agenda as some kind of educational lesson? Of course, why should the MPAA care? They got the headlines they wanted out of the Associated Press, so it shouldn't really matter if the story isn't actually true.

Doing more with the iSight

Doing more with the iSight 01/16/2004 01:01 PM

The iSight came close to being the biggest disappointments of my new Mac experience. It looks gorgeous and appears to integrate seamlessly with iChat AV, although as I don't currently have any contacts with an iSight I haven't been able to try video conferencing yet. The dissapointment is that there was no clear way of using it to capture video directly - a feature that I reasonably expected from iMovie. Apple's knowledge base knocks the point home pretty clearly:

iSight is intended for use as a video conferencing camera, and does not output the DV format necessary for capturing video with iMovie.

Well that sucks. Thanksfully before writing the thing off completely I did some Googling and turned up this excellent O'Reilly article: Ma king Movies with the Apple iSight, which shows how Apple's free QuickTime Broadcaster software can be used to capture footage straight from the iSight to disk.

Surprisingly for Apple the procedure is far from transparent, but at least it's possible.

Oh, and the biggest disappointment? The fabled backlit keyboard, which tends to be drowned out by the light from the laptop screen making it more of a gimmick than a useful feature.

iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iSight See Updates

iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iSight See Updates 04/18/2005 06:45 PM
Jeff Carlson (~180 words)

iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iSight See Updates -- Apple last week released updates to three of its iLife '05 applications, providing a small but welcome collection of bug fixes. iPhoto 5.0.2 (a 5.5 MB download) gains stability and improved performance, especially on PowerPC G3-based Macs. It also allows resizable thumbnails in book layout mode and improves slideshow performance. iMovie HD 5.0.2 (a 2.7 MB download) addresses audio and video synchronization, adds better support for pass-through devices (such as analog-to-digital converters), and improves exporting HDV (high definition) video back to the camera. It also seems to fix a bug where titles would disrupt DV video clips, and better handles iMovie 4 projects that used speed-adjusted clips. iDVD 5.0.1 (a 2.6 MB download) improves stability and compatibility with iMovie HD and with iPhoto slideshows. Lastly, Apple updated the iSight software to version 1.0.3 (a 1.1 MB download), which improves the audio recording capabilities of the tiny video camera. All four updates are available via Software Update, or as separate downloads. [JLC]
