iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch

iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch 11/04/2003 05:20 AM
When Apple first launched a Windows version of the iPod, they worked with MusicMatch to supply the necessary software, since they didn't have a Windows version of iTunes. Eventually, they decided to launch their own. This wasn't a huge surprise to the folks at MusicMatch who realized immediately that their old partner had become a competitor. What they didn't expect, however, was that the new iTunes for Windows would shove installed copies of MusicMatch aside, and stop it from working with the iPod. That's right. Even if you had been using MusicMatch for your iPod prior to downloading iTunes, the iTunes install disables that functionality. This seems to go a little bit too far. Installing a new application should not interfere with the way old applications work - especially when many people will probably want to continue to use both (or will just be testing out iTunes before deciding whether or not to stick with MusicMatch).

Pocket Chapel: USB Altar Drives 06/07/2004 07:29 AM

pocketchapel.jpg imageJust as the miracle of the Eucharist transforms a piece of tasteless unleavened cracker into a bloody hunk of godflesh, so does the gluing-on of an obnoxious plastic crucifix transfigure a simple USB flash memory drive into the storeplace of your personal holy of holies. Simply purchase and download a copy of Pocket Chapel, a virtual altar in which to place virtual idols holy objects, light eCandles, and place flowers across the feet of a pixelated virgin Mary. "See it," they say, "as a sign of god on your Computer, which remembers you, that we all are a part of a bigger thing." Pocket Chapel is available on Pocket PC for only 12 pieces of dollars (USB Altar Drives sold separately). (Thanks, Robert!)

Political Human Sacrifice, the summer
reality series

Political Human Sacrifice, the summer
reality series
09/09/2004 12:03 AM
Reality shows meet real politics as radio talk show hosts John and Ken have chosen Republican David Dreier and Democrat Joe Baca as their Political Human Sacrifices of 2004. Dreier is the chairman of the House Rules Committee who wiel ds tremendous power. But here in Southern California, Dreier is under fire for his pro-outsourcing and pro-illegal immigration stands.

With Dreier's winning vote margin being 45,000, can one radio talk show beat the pundits and upset an entrenched incumbent? The pair will be campaigning against Dreier and Baca every day until the general election. The talk hosts might be getting a little help from, of all people, Larry Flynt's Hustler Magazine, who is in the process of working on a story that will "out" Congressman Dreier (as first reported by the blog which was previously discussed here). Dreier's challenger must be overjoyed.

Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living
together - mass hysteria.
06/05/2005 11:11 PM
Well, it's an old rumor, but many sources (including the NYT, WSJ, Wired, and many rumor sites) are reporting that Steve Jobs will be announcing a switch to Intel at the WWDC tomorrow. The WSJ claims Apple will be switching to x86 processors, while others speculate Intel will simply be manufacturing PPC chips, or only processors for a tablet PC. If the rumors are true, and it seems like they are, what of the Intel DRM recently announced? Are we destined to have DRM hardwired into our computers no matter where we turn? Curiously, the major rumor site has remained mum on the matter. Your best bet to follow the drama will probably be MacRumors, who will be providing live updates from Steve-o's keynote tomorrow.
