Gorilla Usability
Gorilla Usability
12/23/2002 10:55 AMNot everyone has time to conduct a formal usability study, or the
money to invest in a full blown usability initiative, and frankly,
lots of times that might not be the best option anyway. Sometimes a
designer or developer needs that one-on-one, maker-to-user interface.
Gorilla Usability will show you some ways to get to know your users in
a real world, out-from-behind-the-glass kind of way.

Koko goes to the dentist
About a month ago, Koko, a 300-plus-pound ape who became famous
for mastering more than 1,000 signs, began telling her handlers... she
was in pain. They quickly constructed a pain chart, offering Koko a
scale from one to 10. When Koko started pointing to nine or 10 too
often, a dental appointment was made. (There's a rather funny
development at the very bottom of the story)

Brains turn gorilla suits invisible
Brains turn gorilla suits invisible
05/06/2004 04:30 AMInteresting piece on experiments in "change-blindness" -- the brain's
refusal to take note of changes in our visual field.
Working with Christopher Chabris at Harvard University, Simons came up
with another demonstration that has now become a classic, based on a
videotape of a handful of people playing basketball. They played the
tape to subjects and asked them to count the passes made by one of the
teams.
Around half failed to spot a woman dressed in a gorilla suit who
walked slowly across the scene for nine seconds, even though this
hairy interloper had passed between the players and stopped to face
the camera and thump her chest.
However, if people were simply asked to view the tape, they noticed
the gorilla easily. The effect is so striking that some of them
refused to accept they were looking at the same tape and thought that
it was a different version of the video, one edited to include the
ape.

Wow! Zounds! Forsooth! Google bought Blogger! Now there's
something I wouldn't have guessed. Honestly. Doc has more. [_Go_]
And over on Anil Dash's blog, Bill has a damn good point:
But what no one has mmentioned, and may really be the key, is that
Pyra has/is about to have a version of Blogger written more or less
completely in Java that can be deployed on any server. The Globo deal
was just the tip of the iceberg, they (Ev and Jason) wanted to sell
this into corporations for a few $k per server. Combine that with
Google search appliance and maybe another odd piece or two and you
have a very sophisticated, valuable Intranet addition. [_Go_]

OSCON winds down with success story,
economic nonsense, and a big gorilla
07/31/2004 07:12 AMThe final day at OSCON kicked off with an encouraging and standing
ovation-evoking keynote from Cartography Associates President David
Rumsey, who laid out how open source principles may be applied to an
emerging "digital library world." That was followed by a Novell talk
about the success of switching from proprietary to open source, a
discussion of some "nonsense" economic theory, and a call for open
source to step up and help feed a big, bad gorilla known as King Kong.
Earlier OSCON stories: Day one, day two, day three, day four.
