Macworld review: 15-inch PowerBook G4s
10/29/2003 03:24 AMEight months after Apple announced its smallest and largest PowerBook
G4s -- the 12-inch and 17-inch PowerBook G4s, in aluminum, not
Titanium -- Apple released the laptop many professional Mac users had
been waiting for -- the aluminum 15-inch PowerBook G4. With its slick
performance, bright screen, and support for USB 2.0, FireWire 800,
AirPort Extreme, and Bluetooth, this laptop was worth the wait. But
people who've received PowerBooks with loose latches or video problems
may wish that Apple had taken a bit more time to iron out kinks.

Is That An MP3 Player In Your Sleeve?
Is That An MP3 Player In Your Sleeve?
07/26/2004 05:31 AMOver two years ago we first wrote about Infineon's
plans
for an MP3-player jacket, which would have the electronics sewn
directly into the jacket. Readers expressed skepticism towards the
idea, and I predicted it would be quite some time before it actually
came to market. However, it appears that a
jacket with a built
in MP3 player and bluetooth gateway to a mobile phone is about to hit
the market. It even has a keyboard/controller built directly into
the sleeve. It also comes with headphones, and a microphone in the
collar. The system will turn off the music and let you switch to the
phone whenever a call comes through. Now, the question is whether or
not anyone actually wants it. It doesn't hold very much music, and as
music players have gotten smaller, does it really make sense to have
that technology sewn directly into your jacket? It really limits the
overall usefulness of the music player, since you need to be wearing
or holding the jacket to use it. Furthermore, since most jackets are
fairly seasonal, it would seem like the MP3 player would be pretty
useless for a good portion of the year. It
might make sense as
a fairly expensive gateway system, like how it works with a Bluetooth
phone, if they could set up a similar system for just about any music
player that someone could just plug into the jacket.

Calling
Kimora Lee Simmons a designer is generous, at best (we prefer donut licker), but there's
no denying this custom PSP sleeve made from over a pound of gold is
the easiest way to make the PSP both less portable and more stealable.
Of course, I'd sport it like there was no tomorrow and would wear my
nicest 'street' dress.

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,

06/28/2004 09:35 PM
It catches eyes, that's for
sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software
before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an
unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost
two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of
LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than
the airline magazine.
"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast
to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly
is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"
