Mobile Gaming Device Subsidized With
Ads?

Mobile Gaming Device Subsidized With
Ads?
09/08/2004 05:26 AM
Remember back in the bubble days when everything you could ever possibly want (including cars and computers) were available for free if you just agreed to advertising? Apparently we're coming back to bubble thinking. Tiger Telematics made something of an odd splash a few months ago when they announced that the portable gaming device they were working on was going to be called Gizmondo, which didn't endear them to the folks at gadget website Gizmodo. However, some more details have come out about the device -- including their back-to-the-bubble ideas concerning business models. In order to compete with all the competition from Nintendo, Sony, Nokia, Tapwave and others, they've decided to make the device as cheap as possible, while subsidizing it with downloadable video ads. Yes, that's right. You'll be able to get your cheapo device, but you'll have to agree to watch 3 video ads per day. The ads are intended to be targeted, and will have some sort of actionable component to them (the example given is a movie trailer with the ability to click through and buy tickets on the fly). Of course, with prices already pretty low on many of these devices (often subsidized by game revenue) it may be tough to really compete unless they can somehow get the price down somewhere near free. At the same time, despite the GPS location tracking component of the device, these video ads don't seem to really do anything to take advantage of your mobility (other than to suggest the local theater). We've said it before, but simply forcing ads on people in a mobile environment isn't going to get anyone very far. Someone who's mobile has far too many distractions. What will happen to the Gizmondo when advertisers realize no one is paying attention to the ads and they refuse to buy any more?

Microsoft creating new mobile device

Microsoft creating new mobile device
protocols
09/09/2004 09:10 AM
Microsoft will introduce a new system for mobile devices that connect with PCs, with the end aim of allowing IT Managers to restrict specifically what can, and more importantly what cannot, connect to their network.

Devices like iPods and USB key rings present a major security risk to corporate networks. They allow users to easily by-pass restrictions on what is allowed onto the network; they also present security challenges in terms of restricting what leaves corporate networks. Currently, sys admins on large scale networks have few tools to restrict this kind of activity; some high security organisations and many government systems ban devices outright, and Microsoft wants to present companies with an alternative to this option. Padmanand Warrier, a developer in Microsoft's Windows unit, told C|Net that many Windows admins had reported it as "a real problem".

Microsoft will implement "Plug and Play Extensions" in 2006 (i.e. with Longhorn), and it will affect how all mobile devices connect to PCs (wireless, Bluetooth, USB). Microsoft announced the new technology at this years IDF in San Francisco.

Apple Computer has contracted to use the powerful video, image, and music chips designed by Alphamosaic of Cambridge, UK, in a future multimedia mobile device. A report in the Silicon Valley Watcher says the British company was acquired by Broadcom last year. According to the report, the branding for the Apple multimedia product is not yet known. The public specifications describing the Alphamosaic chips indicate Apple could use it to build a family of mobile hand-held digital devices equipped with wireless communications more advanced than its current iPod family. Broadcom's 54g technology is already used by Apple for its wireless products.

Dell Offers Unlimited GPRS with New Card
and T-Mobile
11/10/2003 10:53 PM
Dell's new card for tri-mode GPRS is $99, but it allows unlimited GPRS use on T-Mobile's network for $30 per month: The card works on Dell Latitude and Inspiron notebooks, and you can subscribe to either AT&T Wireless or T-Mobile for service. However, AT&T's plan starts at $30 per month for 10 Mb, while T-Mobile's offering is $30 per month for unlimited usage or $50 per month for unlimited GPRS and hotspot use on T-Mobile's network. Here's an important note, however: the unlimited GPRS for no additional fee does require activation and a one-year commitment, but it also only includes T-Mobile's GPRS network. How extensive that network is, I'm not sure, but the question is whether or not you're informed when you're roaming and using GPRS: can you just not connect or are you charged some enormous rate without knowing about?...
