What Can Nanotech Do for You?

What Can Nanotech Do for You? 03/20/2003 01:05 PM
While tiny technology, such as minuscule robots that take inventory or scan the bloodstream for signs of disease, never fails to amaze, it also tends to generate skepticism over the extent of its practical applications. But experts say that nanotechnology is already benefiting a range of industries and is poised to deliver significant advances.

underpants.gifI'm going to give you two possible methods for keeping your panties fresh and odor free. Please choose one:

1. Purchase Green-Shield Underwear, which uses nanotechnology to create a negative ionic field near your junk to repel bacteria while increasing circulation and leaching toxins from the body. This underwear also absorbs "far-infrared rays" and cause your cells to vibrate a higher frequency which speeds up metabolism and helps you eliminate wastes.

2. Wash your stinky underpants.

I'm going to let you all mull that one over and get back to me, but I'm going for #1. The more untested, chemically treated fabric I can press against my Bobs-Yer-Uncle the better.

Nanotech and Kabbalah

Nanotech and Kabbalah 09/02/2004 08:11 AM
David Pescovitz: At the NanoBot, Howard Lovy writes about the philosophical connection between nanotechnology and the Jewish mysticism of Kabbalah. This is not newage (rhymes with "sewage") mumbo-jumbo, but rather an informed, passionate, and moving thought-exercise about the "spirit" of science:
"...the most brilliant men of Medieval Jewry, shut out of any other profession in which their intellect could be used, spent what I used to think was a complete waste of mind power, reflecting on the minutia of Jewish law – taking the Torah and extrapolating a complex system of laws. Creating, codifying, obsessively ordering and numbering a spiritual system into a logical system.

But the smaller you get, the more you see the logic and order break down. The laws of physics seem to change. The smaller the size, the deeper the mystery and the more the orderly turns chaotic. It all meets on the nanoscale and below, where spirit/spirituality meets the individual components of organisms, where sand meets wave, where analog meets digital, where spirit meets matter."

“One of the cultural icons of nanotechnology is the image of the surgical team from the 1966 science fiction movie, Fantastic Voyage, motoring along through the bloodstream of scientist Jan Benes. Everyone knows the image is about as closely related to real-life nanotechnology as Jurassic Park is to genomics-still, it’s hard to shake. The scene, and others like it have inspired a generation of researchers to pursue technologies that may one day deliver cancer-fighting drugs…

Israel's nanotech-powered superhero

Israel's nanotech-powered superhero 03/28/2005 01:16 PM
David Pescovitz: Over at the NanoBot, Howard Lovy introduces us to Israel's first "nanotechnology-powered" superhero, The Golem. The superhero stars in a new daily comic strip hosted on Ynetnews.
Golem Howard writes: Golems are clay creatures of Jewish legend brought to "life" by rabbis who can master the correct Kabbalistic incantations. Mary Shelley was said to have been inspired by them when she created Frankenstein. The most famous of these Jewish Frankensteins was the 17th century Golem of Prague, created out of clay and brought to life with one word, "emet" ("truth"), placed on its forehead by Rabbi Jehudah Loew...

Since then, the golem has come to symbolize how the "creations" of man can go horribly wrong. I wonder if this comic's creators are aware that if they are to stay true to the golem legends their superhero must ultimately fail. The moral of the Jewish myth is that it is dangerous for mankind to "play God," or to "alter nature" by giving life to clay...

In this modern version, it's government bureaucracy that goes awry. The first comic begins with Professor Finstein's "Israeli Super Hero Project" about to become the victim of budget cuts. He convinced the government to build it using "these very small appliances," which turned out to be nanobots, of course. What he did not say was that he neded "67 trillion" of them to build a proper super hero. "Oy vey .." exclaims the guy from the Israeli budget office.
