Accused Killer
05/11/2004 12:17 PM
A man who felt angry and helpless when the suspect accused of a hit-and-run accident that killed his brother didn't show up at the trial, set up a website with descriptions of the accused man. He never expected it to actually help find the guy, but at least it was an outlet. Last week, however, he received an email telling him where the man was. He forwarded it to the police who captured the guy a few hours later. Of course, despite the article's headline, this isn't entirely a "the web found my brother-in-law's killer" story. It sounds like the only reason the informant knew about the website was because the local news did a story on TV about the website. So, really, the website was only useful in getting television publicity.

Overall, the company has earned better marks with IT administrators in several areas, including making an effort to understand customers better, and offering customers a better value for their money. Slightly fewer customers this year said they were looking at Linux as an alternative to Windows, compared with last year.

Hell, you could even build your own Roomba, if that's what you wanted, using the capabilities of the embedded microcontrollers (Mitsubishi M16c) , video camera, 802.11b, gyrometers, and temperature, light, shock, and infrared sensors. You can even program it in good ol' Visual C++ (or something more robust, probably, if you're bright enough to code your own interface). Sure, its casing looks like a Volkswagen dropping, but for $10k you can't expect to get ED-209.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

Who will speak for us?

Who will speak for us? 02/01/2005 09:33 PM

Here's what the always-excellent telecom analyst Anna-Maria Kovacs has to say about the regulatory implications of the AT&T-SBC deal:

"As Congress works on rewriting the Telecom Act and as the FCC moves ahead on a whole host of issues ranging from inter-carrier compensation to the treatment of broadband and VoIP, the debate will be very different without AT&T. The major voices in Washington will be those of the ILECs, the cable companies, and the content providers."

It's a sobering thought. The counterweights to the incumbent local phone companies will be... the incumbent local cable companies, and every user's friend, the content industry. That doesn't seem to leave any industry forces pushing for competition, innovation, or user empowerment. To the contrary, it makes it easier to foresee regulatory and Congressional deals in which both sides work to keep users and new entrants at bay.
