pretty as a picture

"We've been available through AIM for 2.5 months now. I've handed out cards to YAs (and a few adults) and have them around the library for people to take. I had the chance to speak to 75 freshman and gave told them about it. (They were pretty amazed). Anywho, this has resulted in over 50 questions from about 35 patrons. (And no, I'm not counting the questions asking if I was a robot or a person). Not a bad ROI." [walking paper]

AP - Because Sen. John Kerry is the challenger and lags President Bush in most national polls, he seems to have the most to gain from a strong performance in the upcoming fall debates. Some Democrats see the face-offs as the last chance for a Kerry breakout. But presidential debates present pitfalls as well as opportunities.

Does The Government Have To Prove A Need
For The Do Not Call List?
11/04/2003 03:39 PM
Telemarketers are still fighting the national "Do Not Call" list of course, with one claiming that the government has to prove there's a "need" for such a list. It seems like the 50 million people who signed up in the course of just a couple of months suggests there is a real need, but why don't we turn that around? I would like "Mainstream Marketing Services Inc.", the company who claims this, to prove to me why there's a need for them to call me when I have no interest in being bothered.

Does Gmail Prove Web Applications Can

Does Gmail Prove Web Applications Can
Work?
07/07/2004 04:10 PM
Simson Garfinkel is still a bit worried about Gmail's privacy implications, but believes it's one of the first web applications that performs like a desktop application, and believes that's what makes it really powerful. The problem many people have had with hosted applications is the speed at which they run compared to similar desktop apps. However, by using some sophisticated javascript code, Gmail loads a lot of stuff into local memory, making it quite fast, despite being a web app. Of course, there are those who believe that in doing so, Gmail also "breaks the web" in that it doesn't follow typical rules about URLs that a "true" web-based app should follow. There is also the issue, menti oned earlier today about just how safe various online applications are. Either way, it's looking like the vision of the "network computer" might finally be making a comeback. Update: As if on cue, Broadband Reports points us to a new Gmail exploit that shows how some of your info may be vulnerable.

It takes a snake to prove that .NET is

It takes a snake to prove that .NET is
fast for scripting
12/11/2003 07:18 AM
Some language experts have said publicly that scripting languages based on .NET and Java Bytecodes will always perform poorly due to limitations in bytecode design.

Jim Hugunin, contrarian to the core, has posted an email which suggests that .NET could possibly be faster than C by comparing Python written in C (CPython) with one written in .NET (IronPython). Jim is the original author of the Java implementation of Python (Jython), so he has the skills to back his claim.

If his claims are correct, I think that the push to move scripting languages (eg. PHP) to Parrot or similar bytecode systems which can be Just-In-Time compiled will accelerate.

washingtonpost.com - Most file-sharing programs aren't the most upstanding citizens of the computing world. Yes, the entertainment industry hates them for the way they're used to download movies and albums without paying -- but many of these programs also fail to treat their own users well, often installing an unadvertised, unwanted load of advertising and spyware.
