Speculation: Magnesium iMacs? 12/10/2003 11:37 AM

Digitimes is reporting that Apple will launch a "New New iMac" in early 2004. Taiwanese IT sources claim that Apple is adopting less expensive materials and a simplified manufacturing process in order to offer a more competitive cost. New iMac sales have been lackluster, with the unique model selling only half as well as the original iMac Apple launched in 1998. The first "New New iMac" is reported to feature an aluminum-alloy case and a 20-inch LCD display, and is...

I am "almost certained" that Apple will introduce the ability of streaming music to mulitple AirPort Express. Just some minor modification in iTunes, and add in some sync code between different AirPort Express, and, viola, Apple customers have another reason to buy more AirPort Express.
Of course, I am not the Apple engineer to add in all these codes, so I probably made this a little simplier than it is. Well, maybe iTunes 4.8 then?

uitags: Taglib for Common Webapp UI
Problems
06/05/2005 10:49 PM

uitags is an interesting open source project that tries to package solutions to common webapp UI problems (i.e. blog post/comment input and session timeout) into a taglib. I think what they are doing is valuable but they need to allow developers to try alternate, possibly browser-specific, solutions beside their own.

For example, telling the user that session is about to expire is not very helpful because the user has only three choices, a) do nothing, b) submit incomplete form, or c) manually save incomplete content and then try again.

A more friendly solution monitors user activity to decide automatically whether to transparently rekindle session or save the entered text (without formal submission) using AJAX techniques. If saved, saved input box can be replaced with a friendly message with a link to renew session and content. If saving content scraps at the server is not an option then there are other techniques such as client-side Flash Shared Object storage.

Science Types Embed Anti-Seizure Device
In Skulls
08/20/2004 10:57 AM

mcog-idd0820041.jpg imageResearchers at MCG Medical Center (First Hollywood, then Science!? That man is amazing!) are testing a new implantable device that is designed to stop seizures in patients whose fits - can you say fits? - are not otherwise well controlled by drugs. By pre-recording a patient's seizures, they establish a pattern that can be used to detect future seizures. Then they - and this is where it gets good - create a "form-fitting defect in the skull for the device ... and use tiny screws to hold it securely in place." Yes!

If the device recognizes an oncoming seizure it sends an electrical stimulus to stop it - unnoticed by patients.

Because even a single seizure every few months still prevents patients from safely doing everyday things like driving and cocaine, doctors have as their goal the complete and total prevention of all seizures. We'll find out how well they've done in two years, when the study is complete.

Read - Implantable device designed to detect, stop seizures under study at MCG [EurekAlert]
