Microsoft Corp. says it is looking to turn over more of its programs to open-source software developers, playing a greater role in a process that the Redmond company has criticized strongly at times in the past. Money-makers like the company's Windows operating system and Office productivity suite aren't on the table -- or anywhere near it. But the company has so far released two software-development tools to the open-source community, and it wants to continue the practice, a Microsoft platform manager told an industry group this week.

Too many open source advocates complain about Microsoft writing terrible buggy software and think that open source developers do it better. The truth is Microsoft is innovative, has vision, and executes well. If open source developers can do as well as Microsoft, it's a big compliment. Smart people like Miguel de Icaza and Brendan Eich have known this for a long time. Miguel has a reality check for these innocent virgins.

Brendan (one of the Mozilla leads) has a frank assessment of Mozilla too. I talked about this last year.

Two weeks ago, I wondered out loud about the top 10 worst IT business decisions ever made and nominated HP's decision to follow DEC down the road to oblivion for top spot. Today I'd like to suggest that the U.S. Defense Department's continued use of Microsoft's software is likely to top a future list of this kind. The equation here is simple. First, recognize that Microsoft's software security depends crucially on keeping its source code secret. That's not a comment from an anti-Microsoft bigot -- it's the testimony given under oath by Microsoft vice president Jim Allchin. Even limited release of Microsoft's code, Allchin told judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly's federal court in May 2002, would threaten national security because the code is both seriously flawed and widely used in the Defense Department. But consider that only nine months later, in February 2003, Microsoft announced an agreement giving communist China full access to the source code for Windows and related tools.

Venture capitalist Tim Oren has posted an excerpt from an email sent to a venture capitalist mailing advertising a seminar, put on by Microsoft, about the dangers of open source technology. By itself, that's no surprise, but the language in the email is fairly over the top, claiming that some potential acquiring companies "view open source as being no different than fraud on the books." That's probably true if the "acquiring companies" are Microsoft and SCO. Otherwise, most companies look at it from the reasonable standpoint: does the technology do the job it needs to do? Anyway, does this sort of stuff actually convince any company or any VC that they shouldn't go with open source technology if it does the job? If so, would you really want to invest in or buy such a company so easily swayed by such arguments?

How exactly do you stop a much awaited, overly hyped software release from the billion dollar Redmond giant Microsoft? The Open Source front has no definite strategy on how to catch the raging bull by its ‘Longhorn’, but is closely following the “If you cant beat ‘em, join ‘em” mantra. Microsoft’s Longhorn release is slated for 2006, and the Linux desktop segment is in the firing line to be gored in its tracks. With a gradually developing market, the acceptance of Linux at the desktop level is still relatively low, and the last thing that Linux vendors need is a new OS from Microsoft.

MyEclipse 3.8.1

MyEclipse 3.8.1 08/28/2004 01:03 AM

MyEclipse 3.8.0 GA, released early last week, had a lot of bugs because the MyEclipse team decided to throw in IBM's contribution to Eclipse's Web Tools project which weren't production quality yet.  It's the price one has to pay for being too eager.

Thankfully, they made up for their mistake in short order by releasing version 3.8.1 last Sunday which fixes the most apparent bugs.  I am sure there are bugs yet to be unearthed, but I used it last night and found no serious problems that prevents me from using it.  They even added Sysdeo-style webapp project layout I mentioned before.

For $30 per year, MyEclipse offers a truck load of essential tools for server-side Java developers and unreasonably responsive technical support.Think of MyEclipse as buying timeshare on a talented blacksmith.  If you want something done, it's just a matter of screaming the loudest.  Highly recommended.

MyEclipse

MyEclipse 07/15/2004 07:10 AM

Since Sysdeo doesn't let me debug JSP, I subscribed to MyEclipse which, at $31 a year, seems like a good deal considering the range of features it offers.  What I didn't like was that MyEclipse tries to be too smart, too helpful, and makes too many assumptions about how MyEclipse would be used.  MyEclipse assumes it's users are J2EE developers and it's features are arranged to support that.  In my case, I just want to debug JSPs in existing projects.  But when I tried to add WebProject capability to my webapps, it wouldn't let me because the root of my project is the web root directory instead of using a subdirectory as WebRoot.

MyEclipse also disables features until certain conditions are met.  Since the conditions are not visible, figuring out how to enable the feature ends up being a game of hide and seek.  For example, Struts capability is grayed out until WebProject capability is enabled.  While this makes sense logically, it's being unnecessarily helpful since addition of Struts capability doesn't actually depend on anything to be added.

Anyway, I am going to create a blank WebProject and figure out what the WebProject wizard does so I can manually convert my projects.

New Bluetooth Crack

New Bluetooth Crack 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

Happy Friday:

Cryptographers have discovered a way to hack Bluetooth-enabled devices even when security features are switched on. The discovery may make it even easier for hackers to eavesdrop on conversations and charge their own calls to someone else's cellphone.

"Our attack makes it possible to crack every communication between two Bluetooth devices, and not only if it is the first communication between those devices," says Shaked.

Check out the time required to pull this off:

They show that once an attacker has forced two devices to pair, they can work out the link key in just 0.06 seconds on a Pentium IV-enabled computer, and 0.3 seconds on a Pentium-III. "This is not just a theoretical break, it's practical," says Schneier.

FeedDemon Crack

FeedDemon Crack 06/18/2004 09:27 AM

Dave Winer and Evan Williams commented that the people who shout the loudest are often the ones who have no basis for their anger. I'm reminded of this fact by an email I received this morning. Here's a quote:

"Fix your piece of s--- program! I upgraded to FeedDemon 1.10 and it crashes with 'Win32 device error.' Did you even test this s---?"

I've actually received a number of emails (and one forum post) about this bug, but I have no plans to fix it. Why? Because the error message only appears if you upgrade a cracked version of FeedDemon 1.0. This is a deliberate error message that FeedDemon 1.10 displays when it detects that you upgraded from a specific cracked version of FeedDemon 1.0.

That's right, people who use a pirated version of FeedDemon are emailing me for support. It never ceases to amaze me when people not only steal from me, but also expect me to spend my time answering their questions. And more often than not, the email I've received about this problem reads like something a drunk teenager would write.

I've written about piracy befor e and I'm not planning to start another lengthy rant. But I do have a request for those who have justified their use of cracked versions of my work: don't ask for support. I support my family with sales of my software, and my life is affected - dramatically - by the existence of cracks. Please, if you're using a pirated version of my software, don't expect me to help you.

Slashdot -- Someone Smoking Crack ? 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Slashdot -- Someone Smoking Crack ? Now I know that the Slashdot audience isn't all that reliable at best. Yes we all read it but we rarely trust it. Still I'd expect a little better than this: The Object Prevalence concept, developed by the Prevayler team, and implemented in Java, C#, Smalltalk, Python, Perl, PHP, Ruby and Delphi, can be a great a solution to this mess. The concept is pretty simple: keep all the objects in RAM and serialize the commands that change those objects, optionally saving the whole system to disk every now and then (late at night, for example). [_Go_] Now that's a cool concept. So I did the natural thing and went and looked for the code. Since I'm a php-head, I figured that I'd look there to start. Nope! According to SourceForge, "This project has not released any files". Well I can get by in Perl so I thought "Ok, not my preference but ok". Nope. Well I think Python is neat and people I respect a lot like it. Additionally Guido has just plain guts to make the decision he did regarding mandatory indentation. Break conventions is hard so I figured I'd look at the Python version. Nope! Well once upon a midnight dreary, ... (bag the mock Poe), I did a lot of Pascal. Nope! It turns out that only the C# and Ruby versions exist. I couldn't get the Smalltalk page to come up so I don't have a clue there. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anything about the concept but just pointing out that this posting is essentially wrong on many of the major details. And, sadly, it doesn't really surprise me at all.

"Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug" 06/19/2004 04:52 PM

Fifteen of us gathered last night for a screening of the 1992 Tim Robbins political satire Bo b Roberts.  This mockumentary of a folksinging conservative Wall Street trader turned politician has held up surprisingly well.  In the background of the movie, President Bush is in the White House and American troops are about to invade Iraq.  Gore Vidal does a great job playing a Ted Kennedy-style career senator.  The songs are fun but sadly the soundtrack has never been made available.

My favorite part of the movie is when Bob Roberts closes a letter to a 7-year-old girl in Vermont with the admonition "Don't do crack; it's a ghetto drug."

This is the perfect movie for an election-year party.
