A Better Image Rotator

A Better Image Rotator 08/10/2004 10:49 AM
The first image rotator made it easy to generate a random image on a web page, even if you had never worked with PHP before. The new, more powerful (but still dead easy) version uses a simple configuration file to create custom links, alt tags, titles, and even CSS styles for each image. Plus it handles differently sized images without a hiccup. Enjoy!

Random Image Rotation

Random Image Rotation 01/07/2004 07:10 PM
Readers return to sites that appear fresh and new on each visit. On a news site, magazine, or blog, stories or headlines will be updated frequently. But how can static sites keep that fresh feeling? Dan Benjamin's free image randomizer may do the trick, and you needn't be a programmer to install it.

random LJ image of the moment.

random LJ image of the moment. 04/12/2004 07:22 PM
Recent images posted to Live Journal (probably NSFW at any given moment) sounds like an uninteresting feed from a community: it's just a constant stream of images uploaded to LJ. But the truth is that it's fascinating to watch, to see the whole community summarized into a dozen images of the moment. [more inside]

Can't yah feel the vibe?

That's the sound of a 100,000 rushing into the next big thing - Yahoo 360. Over the coming days people's impressions will be revealed on this hybird social network/blogging tool.

Just to be clear. This is what I call a DLA (digital lifestyle aggregator.) No they didn't get completely right- but it does successfully combine these two latest technology aspects - which each have been hailed as new 'spaces' (marketplaces, trends, what have you.)

But to me - they both were destined to be together. I can remember insinuating that to Joi, Barak and Anil and getting blank stares. I sure hope they realize NOW that all software is about people - and just proving a dinky old "about me" page - ain't gonna cut it.

It's great that SixApart gave LJ a new home - but EVERY 6A product has to have the notion of realtionships, personae, meta-data, messages, groups, the commons, etc. But that woudl come AFTER they provide basic WYSIWYG editing.

But it's not like Yahoo 360 has WYSIWYG - either.

So who's gonna do all things for all customers?

Another thing Yahoo 360 has really blown it on - is Groups. I guess sinec they had something called Groups - they thought they were done. WRONG!
Take a look at what Tribe.net calls a Group. They call it - a Tribe.

It's key - and Yahoo 360 ain't got that. But they will.

They'll also eventually merge it with MyYahoo.

Employees Fired By Text Message Get

Employees Fired By Text Message Get
Compensation
12/11/2003 02:31 PM
Back in June, we wrote about a UK company that had run out of money, and their advisors from PriceWaterhouseCoopers had decided that the most cost efficient way of letting the staff know was to send them all a text message on their phones telling them they had been fired and wouldn't be paid any money owed to them. Apparently, soon after that, the former head of the company was seen "sunning himself at his luxury villa in Spain." How nice. A small group of the fired employees have taken their claims against the company to an employment tribunal and won compensation, as the panel found that the staff had been "cynically manipulated". Of course, now, all the other employees are likely to file cases as well.
