Men Stop Thinking Rationally Around Good
Looking Women
12/10/2003 05:42 AMI imagine this one won't surprise very many people, but it appears
that the old adage that men often... well, think with other parts of
their body in the presence of a good looking woman may have now been
proven true. Some researchers set out to compare the rational
decision making process of men and women after looking at images of
members of the opposite sex in varying degrees of attractiveness.
After viewing an image, the participants were given the chance to earn
$15 to $35 tomorrow or $50 to $75 at some variable point in the
future. The men who had looked at good looking women were
much
more likely to go after the immediate satisfaction of having the
smaller wad of cash tomorrow. All others thought through the
issue rationally and took the large amount at a later date. What does
all of this have to do with technology? Not all that much, but I
found it amusing that the researchers used images from HotOrNot to
represent the "attractive" and "not attractive" images that
participants viewed. Of course, I can also see some using this study
as yet another reason (as if there weren't enough good ones already)
why viewing porn at work is a bad idea (though, you could just as
easily make the argument that it also means men shouldn't be allowed
to work around attractive women either).

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
STOP
VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
03/08/2004 11:08 PM My niece Kim Allan was one of the
actresses in this year's Toronto benefit performance of The Vagina Monologues last weekend.
It's outrageous and funny, and not nearly as shrill in its feminist
message as detractors might have you believe. The performances
are synchronized around Valentine's Day across North America and
beyond, to support various local not-for-profit organizations fighting
to end violence against women. The coordination is done under an
umbrella organization called V-Day: Until the Violence Stops. Their
website descibes some of the excellent work V-Day has done, especially
in Mexico and Pakistan. It also describes the pathetic attempts of the
Catholic Church to prevent showings of the Monologues on Catholic campuses. If
you haven't seen it -- check it out. It's a noble cause, and a great
show.
Monday is also International Women's Day,
but there are surprisingly few events scheduled. This at a time when
the rights of women are under unprecedented assault by the patriarchal
religious right, when governments are slashing and even eliminating
investment in social programs, and when big business is eliminating
and
exporting jobs to third world countries where women and girls toil
long
hours in sweatshops under intolerable conditions for starvation wages.

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They

Stop SQL Injection Attacks Before They
Stop You
09/12/2004 11:33 PMArmed with advanced server-side technologies like ASP.NET and powerful
database servers such as Microsoft® SQL Server™, developers are
able to create dynamic, data-driven Web sites with incredible ease.
But the power of ASP.NET and SQL can easily be used against you by
hackers mounting an all-too-common class of attack—the SQL injection
attack.
The basic idea behind a SQL injection attack is this: you create a
Web page that allows the user to enter text into a textbox that will
be used to execute a query against a database. A hacker enters a
malformed SQL statement into the textbox that changes the nature of
the query so that it can be used to break into, alter, or damage the
back-end database. How is this possible? Let me illustrate with an
example.

NFC Presence
04/01/2005 12:25 PMI don't blog about what I really work on, for obvious reasons, but I
just got two very nice 3220 phones with the
Nokia NFC
Shell, wrote a small web app, and got clearance from my boss to
blog about it, as this stuff is gonna be in the shops, well, if not
today, but very soon. NFC is geek for "Near Field
Communication", which in turn is geek for "doing really
close range communication between two really simple radios." If
you're using any sort of a contactless travel pass, credit card, or
access key, you're using NFC.
This particular app was pretty trivial to do (and required about five
lines of code on the server side): I took two NFC tags (essentially
very small memory cards with a radio that can be read/written from up
to a few centimetres), wrote the URL of my web service on both of them
(using the ServiceDiscovery app included), and wrote a little JSP page
that handles the interfacing with my blog.
Then I stuck one tag on my work monitor, and another one at home.
Now I can just touch one of these tags with my phone, and a few
seconds later (some delays are involved with starting the Java midlet
and connecting to GPRS) the little box on the right changes to show my
location. Voila: NFC-powered presence.
This is in essence no different from doing a Trackback ping; I'm just
doing it by touching something with my phone. Not traversing menus,
not using the keyboard, not even glancing the screen.
Just touching. It couldn't be simpler.
Took me more time to take the pictures and blog about it than to
actually write the app...
(Disclaimer: I work for the company, and I've been somewhat
involved in giving birth to these babies. But I wouldn't write about
it if it didn't give me the warm fuzzies.)

speedometer and the tachometer be at the same place in the dial. I
remember phone numbers and pin codes via the relationship between the
numbers. And so on. This morning I had 512 messages marked unread...

ever see, but don’t go there if you’re feeling fragile or
depressed; this is
news photography, and news is usually all
about pain and death and tragedy. In particular, if you have a little
boy that you love, be careful; 2003 was a year that terrible things
happened to little boys and photographers were there. For more cheer,
skip down to
