Don't Visit Websites With Microsoft IE
Don't Visit Websites With Microsoft IE
06/25/2004 02:33 AMIt really is getting ridiculously dangerous these days for anyone to
keep using Microsoft IE. People always talk about the day when
scammers will start to use "zero day exploits" to smash through
security holes before they're patched, and that's clearly already
happening. The latest move, which is fairly advanced (and many assume
is being done by organized crime groups in Eastern Europe) is to hack
into a variety of popular company websites and install some code to
exploit a known IE vulnerability that has not been patched by
Microsoft. Once this is done, any IE user visiting any of these
websites (which they obviously would assume to be safe based on the
companies involved)
ends
up with some of the most insidious keylogging spyware. The
article won't list the companies, but from the descriptions they sound
like sites anyone might visit on a regular basis (banks, auction sites
and comparison shopping engines). This sounds quite similar to the
Interla
nd hack from last year, but could impact many more users.
Do You Click Randomly On Websites?
Do You Click Randomly On Websites?
09/08/2004 02:29 PMIn a new study about web-use behavior, one of the more interesting
findings was that
people tend
to click a lot on websites -- and they're not talking about links.
People just click within a website. While the snippet linked here
doesn't suggest a reason why, I definitely do this, so I can at least
explain my thought process. There are two reasons why I click on
non-linked parts of websites as I read. First, and probably most
importantly, is to make sure the browser I'm reading is recognized as
the active window. Too often, even if it's the top window, what I'm
reading won't be recognized as the active window, causing problems
when I scroll. The second reason, is that I often highlight what I'm
reading, partly to keep my place and also to keep me focused on the
text I'm reading. There are plenty of websites that don't seem to
allow this sort of activity (blocking the ability to highlight or,
worse, linking whitespace off to some other page), so it's important
that designers start to take into account how people read their pages.
The article also notes that many people seem to click on photographs,
even when they don't link to anything -- and suggests that site
designers may want to start making all photos linked to larger
versions (though, that assumes the reason people click is to see a
larger version).

1-Click, Short-Click, Long-Click,
More-Clicks - All Patented
04/27/2004 05:27 PMtheodp writes
"Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a
patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for
application launch, which covers causing different actions to
occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of
time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period
of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of
time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?"
What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I
know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone
numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the
impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a
right mouse click if you hold down the button.
