Caller ID Spoofing Business Owner Bails
Out Following Death Threats
09/04/2004 12:59 AMLast week, we had mentioned the story of a company that was offering
calle
r ID spoofing for collections agencies and private investigators.
Earlier this week, the company officially launched the solution and
the press went wild... as did many angry people, apparently. The guy
behind the business says he's been inundated with angry calls and
emails, and even had a death threat taped to his door. The anger
apparently isn't so much about the fact that he'll be spoofing phone
numbers, but that he's basically revealing this technology
commercially that was previously only used by hackers and crackers,
who now feel he's somehow selling out. In fact, the response has been
so crazy that he has decided to
sell
the business -- though, the stories of death threats probably
won't do much good for the selling price, which makes this whole story
seem a bit odd. Why not just shut down the service? If people are
really pissed that he's making money off of this, won't selling it off
be just as bad? Something doesn't seem right about the whole story.

The Death of a Room-Mate... Tony

The Death of a Room-Mate... Tony
Meilandt (1957-2004)
04/09/2004 04:01 PMI didn't intend this blog to become a death trip, and I'm determined
that it won't be in the long run, but right now I have another
obituary to write. I'm at the desk in my New York apartment. Right
here, sitting in the same chair I now occupy, surrounded by the same
mementos and miscellaneous layers of human deposition, my
angel-hearted room-mate Tony Meilandt dropped dead a week ago last
night. He was only 46 years old. I'm not sure what killed him. The New
York Coroner's Office has not rendered an official opinion and, based
on my previous experience with that great bureaucratic sphinx, is
unlikely to do so any time soon. As we have seen, mysterious death in
New York City often remains mysterious for many months. It might have
been the flu that got him. For maybe ten days, Tony had been very sick
with the same predatory virus that's been berserking around the planet
all winter. When I talked to him on the phone four days before he
died, I could hear an alarming whistle in his lungs. I told him to go
to a hospital. He told me he had, but that they had sent him home.
Figures. Last time I went to an emergency room in New York, the "John
Doe" in the cubicle next to me died unattended. He might have been cut
down by that strange scythe that sometimes slices through the
re-ascending. After a long season in hell, Tony's life had just been
paroled. He had been something of a legend once in the music business,
having taken a major production role in much of Herbie Hancock's best
recorded output and worked closely with Bill Laswell, Miles Davis,
Ornette Coleman, and many other jazz greats. But then he got lost in a
blizzard of the bad powders that often snow on success in the music
business. He wandered in that white-out for about a decade and
managed, by all accounts, to piss off just about everybody in the
industry during that time. But, by the time I met him, a little over a
year ago, he'd gone through rehab, had been clean for a good long
spell, and was rebuilding his career very rapidly. In short order, he
put together a record album for the Olympics, began managing Bill
Laswell's career again, and had entered into a partnership with East
End Management, which manages a number of artists, including Tom Petty
and Fleetwood Mac. He started sharing rent on my Chinatown pad last
summer. Though he was in residence as sporadically as I was, I was
always happy when we coincided. There was something pure in him, a
radiative sweetness that made his abundant appreciation capable of
penetrating even its most skeptically armored targets. Not everybody
liked Tony at first, but everybody liked him eventually. A lot of
people loved him. I certainly did....

"Police charity" telescammers' creepy
implied threats
09/23/2004 04:05 PM
Mark Frauenfelder:
Jason Powell sez: I've had a rash of telemarketer calls in the last
few days for "Police" or "Sheriff's" charity organizations. In the
past, I've always just said "take me off your list" and hung
up--problem solved. However, this latest call troubled me on new
levels. I'm not sure I'd call it intimidation, but some of the
comments did have a hint of something just slightly less than that.
For example, the caller made several references to my home
address..."how's it going out there on Elm Avenue today?" I guess the
intention is to play on the fear that if I don't donate, I can expect
trouble (we know where you live). The only thing that
troubled me about that is the idea that they're using this tactic on
others who would fall for it.
Suspicion of these callers led me to Google for answers, and I
wasn't too surprised by what I found. While some of these calls are
outright scams, the other, more "legitimate" callers do little to
nothing for the groups they claim to represent--in most cases, the
telemarketing company working on behalf of a police charity give as
little as 15% of the "take" to the charity.
Below are some links I found of interest. I also ran accross the
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement sites page that warns
specifically about fraudulent charitable organizations: "They also
call claiming to represent police or firefighter organizations. They
typically ask victims for donations to help police officers buy
equipment or to assist families of officers disabled or killed in the
line of duty." Link

must/can do according to law).

organization before you donate).
