Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AM
Barry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman" companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire non-travel companies. So, in order to prove that he's not running a travel company... he's going to show them what it means to really run a travel company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella. Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't as high as he had hoped.

Little-known Chinese software maker Evermore Software next month plans to step up its challenge to Microsoft's Office dominance with the release of its Evermore Integrated Office 2004. The Wuxi City, China, company plans to launch the product at the Demo conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, next month. Evermore Integrated Office (EIOffice) combines the components of traditional productivity suites into one application. Users launch EIOffice, not a word processor, then a spreadsheet application, then a presentation tool. Documents are stored in a single file format and the application, written in Java, runs on any operating systems that supports Java, including Windows and Linux, according to Evermore.

human hair
05/26/2004 07:46 PM
A resourceful Chinese company got in trouble for brewing soy sauce out of human hair.
China Central Television (CCTV), the state television station, first raised public worries over the quality of domestic soy sauce by uncovering a substandard workshop in central China's Hubei Province, where piles of waste human hair were found. The hairs were treated in special containers to distill amino acid, the most common substance contained in soybean sauce.

Human hair is rich in protein content, just like soybean, wheat and bran, the conventional and legally accepted raw ingredients for the production of soy sauce.

artifact duplication dispute
04/28/2004 10:20 AM
A Chinese gamer who bought a sword that was deleted by the game-host because it had been duplicated by the seller is suing the game-host to reinstate his sword and apologise. As Terra Nova's Dan Hunter says, "Virtual property, duping, and fraud. Heaven."
After many hours of playing the game, he earned 140 million units of game money, which he spent buying a powerful sword from another player through an online trading platform provided by the operator in November.

On November 16, he found the sword had been deleted from his account. After contacting Optisp several times, he was told that the sword was deleted because it was illegally duplicated.

He is asking the court to order Optisp to give back his sword, which he estimates is worth 1,000 yuan (US$120) in real money, and apologize.

Printed Airline Travel Guides Doing
Fine, Despite The Internet

Printed Airline Travel Guides Doing
Fine, Despite The Internet
12/08/2003 12:58 PM
I have a good friend who knows just about everything having to do with airlines and flight schedules. If I'm ever having any difficulty with scheduling or picking a different flight, I just call him up and he suggests the best plan of action. It's nice to have someone like that who you can call on, because the internet isn't always around (yet) for you to look this stuff up. Plus, sometimes the internet isn't the most efficient way to find this information. While lots of people have predicted the death of certain print publications due to the internet, some are still thriving, such as printed airline travel guides, which list all available flights over a certain period. They're apparently incredibly handy for the frequent traveler who needs to make last minute changes. They can just use the book to look up what flights are around and make quick decisions based on that. Of course, you might think the internet is still better, because it can handle last minute changes, but flights don't seem to change that much or in a noticeable way (changing a gate shouldn't make a huge difference). However, most importantly, you don't need to figure out where the nearest internet connection is to use the book.
