IPv6 on Mac OS X

IPv6 on Mac OS X 03/13/2003 10:16 AM
Enabling IPv6 on OS X. Very neat. Very easy. Dancing turtles everywhere. Use en1 instead of en0 to use the AirPort interface instead of ethernet. Of course, as Aaron points out, the IPv6 transition is a big mess, so who really cares? I've been vaguely contemplating to make my private network run IPv6 instead of on 10.x addresses, but the only advantage is the neat factor (and that would grow old fast I'm sure) and there are many disadvantages. Hmn......

FCC Restructures Crucial Band

FCC Restructures Crucial Band 06/10/2004 05:50 PM
Steve Stroh says today's FCC reworking of the MMDS/ITFS band makes sense, but will be for naught: Read Daily Wireless's explanation of the move for details, but broadly, almost 200 MHz of sweet-spot spectrum in the 2.5 to 2.7 GHz range that's been carved up and relicensed in unpleasantly small and low-utility ways will be restructured for more utility and continuity. Stroh notes, however, that the FCC has opted out of the process by which the transition of existing users will take place. This means that the owners and users of the band have to figure it out. Stroh feels that currently deploying fixed broadband wireless companies have a huge advantage over those that were expecting to carve out new space in this band. Stroh also expects this entire band to go license-exempt within 10 years. Daily Wireless remarks that the 6 MHz sub-bands in the revision fits cellular 3G's needs. In the CDMA world, 1x = 1.25 MHz, as in 1xRTT and 1xEv-DO; 3x = 5 MHz. The service currently hosts a very small number of actually instructional television broadcasters, and they'll have new contiguous channels to use....

Moments of transition

Moments of transition 07/19/2004 04:56 PM
Had my last riding lesson today. I'm going to Iceland in three weeks, so I'm taking a short break before that. Darn, one gets really attached to those horses. Even though I only was there for six weeks, I strangely enough already miss them . Especially these two. *sigh*

The syrupy moment of the day: When Outi was last week, a friend of mine brought us lollipops - heart-shaped, of course - but they were forgotten in the bags. So, today, we chatted on IRC and enjoyed those lollipops, knowing that the other person was doing the same thing far away.

I'm degenerating rapidly, and decomposing into sugar and honey. Whee :)

MSJVM Transition FAQ

MSJVM Transition FAQ 12/15/2003 11:40 PM
A list of programs and websites that are known to depend on the MSJVM will be made available from Microsoft in early 2004. Moving forward, Microsoft is working with the publishers of these programs and websites to remove the requirements for the MSJVM. Businesses may also have custom programs which may have been developed internally or by a software vendor or consultant that may have dependencies on the MSJVM. If your business relies on such programs, you should check with your developer, consultant, or software vendor to understand if there are any dependencies on the MSJVM, and to learn what steps you should take to minimize these dependencies and the potential impact on your business.

I for one have been a fan of Crucial memory for some time now. Well it seems that the time has come for them to take that next big step - branded memory. This is not a typo, Crucial now has their own line of memory! It is called Ballistix and it is considered to be high grade, premium RAM. Designed just for computer junkies like us who expect the best performance from our RAM.

IPv6 Gets Real

IPv6 Gets Real 07/21/2004 10:47 AM

Looks like IPv6 is going from being that funny option in the network stack that nobody uses to being a real live protocol. Reuters has the story.

Vinton Cerf of the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said the next-generation protocol, IPv6, had been added to its root server systems, making it possible for every person or device to have an Internet protocol address.
[...]
"This is a big, big step," Cerf said, speaking on sidelines of ICANN's annual conference held in the Malaysian capital.
[...]
Cerf said about two-thirds of the 4.3 billion Internet addresses currently available were used up, adding that IPv6 could magnify capacity by some "25,000 trillion trillion times".

From reading ICANN's pre ss release, it looks like they're starting with the .kr (Korea) and .jp (Japan) TLD's. I imagine it will be a while before they get confident enough to roll it out for .com, .net, and .org.
