The Death Of Captive Audience
Advertising
08/02/2004 04:42 AMIt's amazing how slowly it takes folks like advertising execs to catch
on sometimes. For the past five years, plenty of people have realized
that there was so much content out there that people were learning to
only deal with content
they wanted. What that means is that
dumb ads
that no one cares about don't work at all. Advertising needs to
be content that people want to see or interact with. It's not about
forcing people to see your ads any more, but about making
people
want to see your ads. Of course, if you don't realize
this, then the rise of the internet, video games, and DVRs seems
scary, because it takes away from the way things have been done in the
past. However, the folks who do realize this, know that this isn't
scary at all, but a huge opportunity to create better content that has
a higher likelihood of actually having an impact on the target
audience.

Microsoft bl0ggers on the move
Microsoft bl0ggers on the move
12/05/2003 03:14 AMMicrosoft's bloggers are on the move. Tons of Microsoft employee
bloggers have been reopening their blogs over on the .NET Weblogs. The problem is that
that homepage now is flying by very fast. Whew. Tons of interesting
info. Do you like Microsoft bloggers over there mixed in with
community? They used to be over on GotDotNet.
I don't know if I like this new approach, but I'm watching and
learning.
Feel free to give frank feedback about this new approach. I'll pass
it along.
I wish we could have tons of decentralized communities and not try
to do everyone in one centralized place. Why should an employee who
wants to blog about the XBOX, for instance, be stuck into .NET
Weblogs?
Microsoft still doesn't have a formal policy or a centralized
recommendation. It's just that a bunch of employees got someone to
open blogs up on GotDotNet and they outgrew that home. I imagine that
the .NET Weblogs will be quickly outgrown too.
Right now we're early on in the process of having employees weblog.
Imagine what'll happen if the numbers grow from a few hundred to a few
thousand? We need to build better systems now to prepare for the
growth.
Any ideas?
Microsoft and IBM Move Accounts
Microsoft and IBM Move Accounts
02/18/2004 02:25 AMTwo technology giants, IBM and Microsoft, are reassigning promotional
accounts with spending estimated at more than $500 million, decisions
that underline the increasing importance of marketing communications
outside the realm of traditional advertising. The accounts being
awarded by International Business Machines and Microsoft to agencies
owned by the Interpublic Group of Companies and the WPP Group cover
assignments unrelated to producing television commercials, print
advertisements and billboards. Rather, the work is primarily centered
on what is known as customer relationship management - that is,
efforts to strengthen the loyalties of current customers that can
range from offers of free merchandise to invitations to sponsored
events.

Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
Contextual Advertising And Search
Advertising Are Different
08/03/2004 12:32 PMApparently, marketers are just now figuring out that browsing and
searching are two different modes of web surfing, and people will
t
reat ads differently in each situation. Some pointed this out
quit
e a while ago, but thanks to Google and Overture promoting
contextually matched ads as somehow being just like search ads, many
advertisers expected similar results -- which they're not getting at
all. So, now, some advertisers seem to be fighting back and are
telling Google and Overture that it's about time they separated out
the two forms of advertising and let the advertisers work each
campaign separately. It appears that Overture has started to move in
this direction, but Google continues to insist that there's no reason
to treat the ads differently.
