Is Hello Kitty a Copycat?

Is Hello Kitty a Copycat? 09/12/2004 11:51 PM
Xeni Jardin: A blogger who describes himself as an "extraordinary ordinary guy in Japan" says this on the 30th anniversary of Hello Kitty:
"Kitty's design was just a crib from ... Musti, created by the Belgian animator/director Ray Goossens (1924-1998) [Ed note: she's the center figure in the BoingBoing graphic at left]. Musti was started as an animation series on TV in 1968, and its picture books were also published. I read some of that books and loved it in my childhood. Although it is evident to everybody that Kitty was an imitation of Musti, Sanrio, the publisher of Hello Kitty have not touched on it. It is said that the total copyright fee for Hello Kitty reaches around 15 billion yen (13.7 million USD) per year, and Sanrio got 23.7 billion yen (21.6 million USD) gross sales in second quarter of 2004. I wonder why they don't feel shady about hiding the fact."
I'm no Hello Kitty historian, and that's news to me. Is it true? Link to post. This guy has a cool blog. His post about Japanese "jinxes" was also interesting.

On a related note, don't miss the image of "Hello Kitty De Milo" in this news story, which is, like, so obviously a total ripoff of some Greek art dude. Link (Thanks, Brian)

Update: OMG! This is turning into one big plushy piracy clusterfuck! BoingBoing reader Eva says, "See my response on Hello Kitty vs Musti here. Basically, I think Musti is in turn a rip off of the Dutch rabbit Miffy, which was published more than a decade before Musti." Link

Is Kazaa Over?

Is Kazaa Over? 06/30/2004 06:01 PM
As someone who has never used Kazaa, I have no idea how its use has changed over time, but apparently, more and more users are bailing out. They're fed up with the adware, the lawsuits (which often target Kazaa users) and all the bogus files. Of course, while that might sound like wonderful news for the recording industry, it's actually much worse. Users aren't giving up on file sharing, they're just switching to other offerings that include more useful features and less annoying crap (gee, what a surprise). The article points out that the various lawsuits against Kazaa owner Sharman appear to be taking their toll as the product has been unable to keep up. However, this whole thing points to a much more important fact: users are going to keep migrating to better products that are further underground. Each time the recording industry thinks they're declaring victory, they're just making their own job harder -- and I don't just mean the job of tracking down and suing file sharing individuals. They're making it increasingly difficult to set up a system that actually embraces file sharing, while still giving them the ability to make money. They could still do it, but they've given no indication that they intend to go down that path. Instead, they seem to enjoy making things worse for themselves, because that lets them keep complaining.

Bye, Bye Kazaa!

Bye, Bye Kazaa! 07/13/2004 11:48 PM
With innovations like eDonkey, SoulSeek, and now with BitTorrent, does Kazaa really even matter anymore? In this article, there is speculation that many of Kazaa’s users are simply logging off completely. Not because they want to buy their music, but they are simply opting for different alternatives instead.

KaZaA Lite Plus is an open source file sharing client that searches the fast track network which KaZaA and Grokster run on, AND also searches Gnutella2 network, so there are a lot more files than KaZaA Media Desktop, Grokster, and Morpheus. [Freeware 3.34 MB]

Is Kazaa Really Centralized?

Is Kazaa Really Centralized? 02/12/2004 02:44 AM
While many have been following the story about the music police raiding Sharman/Kazaa's office, one competitor thinks it's a good thing. Streamline, the makers of the Morpheus file sharing application, has a long history with Kazaa - as they used to license the same technology until they were accused of not paying their bills and were shut off. So, clearly, they are a bit biased against Kazaa, but they're bringing up a very important point. The whole point of having a truly distributed file sharing network is that it can't be shut down, even if you shut down the folks who released the software. Yet, Morpheus was shut down two years ago which made many people questio n how this was possible. Over time, these questions have faded, but the folks behind Morpheus are raising the question again and saying that Ka zaa is really centralized - and have been hiding behind their odd corporate structure to hide this fact for the last couple years. That would be quite a revelation, and would seriously damage Kazaa's legal standing. Thus, the folks behind Morpheus are hoping that the questionable raid on Kazaa's offices will establish this for certain. It appears that, once again, there isn't much harmony in the file sharing world.

Kazaa Ruled Legal In The Netherlands 12/19/2003 01:03 PM
Quite a day for the file sharers of the world. Not only did the Appeals Court reverse the Verizon subpoena ruling, but over in the Netherlands, a judge has ruled that Kazaa is legal. This appears to be a similar ruling to the one earlier this year in the US that found that the various file sharing systems, themselves, were only tools, and not liable for copyright infringement that happened via their networks. The recording industry will, of course, appeal.

ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.2 released!

ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.2 released! 01/22/2004 02:10 AM
A GUI for the eDonkey2000 (and overnet) command line client, based on the GTK+-toolkit and the gnet library ed2k-gtk-gui 0.6.2 is a bug-fix release. Here's the changelog: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- v0.6.2 - The 'All your cores are belong to us' release ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -- * Fixed toolbar in non-green mode with themes that have a radiant background in the toolbar (no more artifacts around the labels and the '?' button) (sorry it took so long until it got fixed) * 'transfered' value is shown again as in previous versions, ie. the (often inflated) value by the core is displayed, and only if 'transfered' is greater than the filesize we calculate a better value from the gaplist. * remember (again) which columns in the download view are supposed to be hidden and which are supposed to be shown. * Fixed erratic GUI freeze on selecting 'shutdown core' * Fixed crash that would happen in certain rare conditions while sorting the download list * Fixed problem with insensitive Go! button in connect dialog when core is on remote host (hopefully; #853664) * Wait a couple of seconds after auto-spawning the core, to give the core opportunity to get going. Otherwise auto-connect on startup would fail after auto-spawning the core (thanks to MrMario64 for pointing this out). * added --noob-wants-to-run-as-root command line switch for those noobs who insist they must absolutely run the GUI as root *sigh*. Must be first command line switch if multiple ones are used. * added --enable-static-gnet2 switch to ./configure, mainly to be able to build packages that are statically linked with gnet2. However, if no gnet2 headers are found, the shipped gnet2 will automatically be used instead now. * for MacOSX: poll-emulator (no need for libpoll - it's just one source file) Use with ./configure --enable-static-poll to force it (otherwise it will automatically be enabled if no poll.h include files are found) * ed2k-link handler now allows you to add downloads in paused state * fixed 'status window clear interval' and 'server rotate interval' (amount configured was taken to be in seconds and not in minutes as it should be) (#866410, #859741) * new icon theme: bluecore (submitted by Anonymous) * mingw and win32 patches by Hazeman * misc. other minor fixes The latest release is available here: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=61752&package_i d=58192 Enjoy!

X
06/29/2004 01:58 PM
eDonkey announced on Tuesday that its peer-to-peer file-sharing software is coming to Mac OS X. Previously, Mac support was available only through a text-based command line interface in the software. eDonkey links every client on the network with each other, allowing them to search within both the entire network and a subset of it. Users can also download files from multiple users simultaneously and automatically continue interrupted downloads during their next session, in addition to the ability to send private messages to other users. The eDonkey application is not finalized for Mac OS X yet, but you can download a Beta of either the free or paid version from the developer's Web site. Both require Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and 64MB RAM; the free version has limited features and displays ads when you use it.

Xeni Jardin: Snip from the Register:
Seven people arrested last week by Dutch law enforcement officials for offering links to allegedly copyright-infringing content have been released. The group shared thousands of movies, games and music files through eDonkey and BitTorrent files.

Dutch lobby organisation BREIN remains likely to start criminal procedures against the site owners. BREIN believes that warez group DVD Europe Team, which shares illegal copies of movies as soon as they are released in cinemas, is part of the group that hosted the files.
