How Not To Price
How Not To Price
05/13/2004 09:23 PMWhile the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that
Six Apart has
released version 3.0 of
their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing
out on the bigger story: the
pricing structure they set up
is being almost
universally trashed
by loyal Mova
ble Type
Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no
opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide
to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of
the most basic rules in pricing:
never take away features and
charge for them. You can charge for
new features - but taking
away features that were included for free before
always pisses
off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like
you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users
set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software
encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and
realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them
around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users
happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There
are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out
every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use
certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart
appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above
the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the
switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six
Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this
is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should
have known how their users would respond to this offering.

12/24/2004 12:46 PMTime Warner Boosts Cable Speeds
Time
Warner has unwrapped a holiday gift for its cable Internet
subscribers: faster downloads. The company plans to roll out increased
speeds of 5Mbits and 8Mbits per second, a 2Mbit boost for its standard
and premium RoadRunner cable offerings. Customers in New York will see
the improved download speeds starting next Tuesday, while the rest of
the country will reap the benefits come January. Time Warner says it
will not increase prices for its 3.7 million broadband users.
Makes you wonder what they were doing with all this bandwidth
before now? Oh.. I guess we know.
The U.S.
Government Wednesday announced that an agreement with Time Warner has
been reached to settle a lawsuit alleging its AOL unit purposely
inflated revenue, and will pay fines of $210 million. In an unrelated
case, Time Warner is also expected to dole out $300 million more to
the Securities and Exchange Commission.

It's not 1998, I promise, despite this announcement
from Microsoft and Thomson to release an updated MSN-branded set-top
box for browsing the web and streaming media from other household PCs.
To launch in October, the $200 broadband-enabled box will come with a
wireless keyboard and remote and will not have much in the way of
built-in storage to "prevent vulnerability to virus attacks" (and to
keep things cheap). MSN TV (formerly Web TV) has a small, if
anachronistically loyal following, but is there really a need for a
second generation, even if it does support broadband?
Especially if it supports broadband?
The current-generation device is pictured; we'll get you pictures
of the new device as soon as we can.
