Microsoft Office 2003 offers self

Microsoft Office 2003 offers self
destructing documents
10/29/2003 01:16 AMAccording to an article in NewScientist.com: Office 2003 features new
versions of Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint, along with various
usability tweaks and new functionality. But the software also comes
with the ability to let users control the way other people use the
documents they create. This can be used to prevent other people
forwarding, copying or even printing a protected email message or
document. "It should work," says Simson Garfinkel, a
computer forensics expert at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT). '"But it could be defeated by a hostile user. There's no way
you could prevent someone from taking a digital picture of the
screen." ... The rights control feature in Office 2003 depends on
having an intermediary computer system with Windows Server 2003 and a
software package called Rights Management Service installed. A
protected email message sent between two users is encrypted and the
recipient's version of Outlook will check with the server to see if
the user is allowed to edit, copy or forward the message. A time-stamp
can also be applied to make the message unreadable after a certain
date. While I suspect that people will quickly figure out how to break
this first generation DRM with the equivalent of a magic marker or
using the shift key, and of course the expired documents will still be
on the (Windows) server, this is probably a pretty good indicator of
where governments and corporations are headed, and Microsoft has a
history of successfully iterating products. While others debate DRM,
Microsoft is creating facts on the ground. Not an encouraging
development....

12/24/2004 12:19 PMElcomSoft Co. Ltd. has released Advanced Office Password Recovery
(AOPR), an application that allows business managers, information
technology support administrators, and law enforcement officials to
gain access to Microsoft(R) Office(R) password-protected documents,
that have been accidentally or purposefully password protected. New
product combines the latest and the most advanced cryptanalysis
algorithms developed by Elcomsoft's research department. AOPR is
capable of instantly recovering passwords for a wide range of
Microsoft's business and office applications, including all components
of MS Office, from the very first DOS versions to Office 2003
programs, including the ones for Windows, Mac, Pocket PC and localized
versions. Over 30 different types of password encryption methods are
supported. [PRWEB Dec 22, 2004]

This isn't just about Vonage or Free World Dialup. As I've noted
in several recent items, the FCC understands full-well that in
tackling
VOIP, it's really defining the rules for the next-generation layered
communications infrastructure.

Someone writing headline copy at Reuters this morning committed a
hilarious crime against the English language.
Catholic monks living on an island off the coast of Wales have flown
in a satellite dish to watch the Pope's funeral.
Despite the flying saucer image this conjures, the monks in fact
merely ordered a satellite dish for the monastery, which was then
delivered to their island by helicopter.

Headline Munger generates random headlines from
the various news sources. The script uses
normalized content from the RSS sources where the
content is composed of titles, and each word in
those titles is saved together with the word that
follows. Once all the content is collected, the
script has a list of unique words each with a
series of next words. When it is run, the script
chooses a random starting point and continues from
there to construct a headline.
Changes:
This release fixes several word selection issues. It improves real
headline detection and avoidance.
