iPods blamed for rise in subway
robberies
03/30/2005 11:35 AM
Reports of robberies in the New York City subway system are up about 20 per cent through mid-March and police officials are blaming the increase Apple Computer’s iPod. "The common denominator are iPods," Paul Browne, the New York City police department's chief spokesman, said yesterday in an Associated Press report. "They're expensive, extremely popular and easy to conceal after they're stolen." In some cases, the pickpockets have lifted the iPods from unsuspecting subway car straphangers, police said. Sometimes thieves snatch the devices and flee out train doors. Similar robberies have increased in and around schools, Browne said. Police have responded by deploying roving teams of uniformed officers in areas where the iPod bandits are most active, he said.

The Rise Of Second Degree Spam

The Rise Of Second Degree Spam 11/17/2003 01:57 PM
While the Direct Marketing Association continues to push for a definition of spam that would make only fraudulent emails spam, they seem to be ignoring the fact that most spam is defined simply as "emails I don't want" - whether legitimate or not. And, under that real world definition, more and more spam is coming from so-called "legitimate" sources. People are starting to call this email "second degree spam". It's not unsolicited, because the receiver signed up at one point or another, but the company delivering the marketing messages has done nothing to make those emails relevant - and thus, in the user's eye, they're no different than spam. The marketers seem to be ignoring this because they think it's to their benefit. They're wrong. The more that lazy marketers simply blast people with irrelevant emails just because they think it's okay that someone "opted-in", the less people will pay attention to these emails. If they actually focused on customizing the messages and providing what people wanted without inundating them with useless stuff, they might actually get a good return. Unfortunately, it's easier to be lazy and use a "scorched earth" policy of blasting out as many messages as possible - even if it will only work to destroy email as a marketing mechanism.

How to fold a T-shirt in 2 seconds 04/29/2004 06:14 AM

Some of you probably have seen this my wife showed me this video that has been going around among Korean-American mothers: a Chinese video showing how to fold a T-shirt in 2 seconds.  The technique works for long sleeve shirts too but takes a couple of seconds longer.  Although I am pretty much a typical male chauvinist pig when it comes to house chores, this video was so amazing it actually made me want to fold some T-shirts!  Wow.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.
