Oh, look, emacs broke again! 06/05/2005 11:55 PM
Who'dve thunk it? Yeah, the OS X 10.4.1 upgrade broke emacs. Or, rather, to put the blame in the right place, the 'clever' tricks that emacs plays to get itself going break with depressing regularity when anything inside the OS shifts around. (Part of the build process actually core-dumps a running emacs and then fixes up the core file to be an executable, which is clever but somewhat fragile on some OSes, including OS X) It's a pity I can't stand the vi-alikes. This has gotten kinda old....

Changes:
The "Configure" info directory now uses dynamic path setting, so info files can go under .app. Improved select() handling and PTY fixes so shell mode and tramp run smoothly. Significant rendering enhancements. Now works under the Art backend under GNUstep. Non-Latin text rendering works (but not fontsets), and LEIM is bundled. UTF-8 is used for clipboard interaction. The arrow cursor is now used on the scroll bar. Objc-mode and tramp are now bundled in site-lisp.

Emacs key bindings for Gaim?

Emacs key bindings for Gaim? 02/10/2004 02:49 AM
Switching between Yahoo Messenger and Gaim is causing me no end of pain. Yahoo Messenger had Emacs key bindings by default, so I can just type and edit without thinking. However, all of the normal editing keystrokes have vastly different effects. My attempts at Googling an add-on or patch have been rather fruitless. I can't believe I'm the only one who is bothered by this. If it matters, I'm using Gaim 0.75....

XSLT-process 2.2 for Emacs released

XSLT-process 2.2 for Emacs released 01/14/2003 02:28 PM

I'm happy to announce a new release of the XSLT-process mode for Emacs. XSLT-process is an Emacs mode for applying and debugging XSLT stylesheets from within XEmacs or GNU Emacs. You can also use this mode to do processing of DocBook documents edited with Emacs.

Tony Addyman contributed most of the changes in this release. He's using Emacs and XSLT-process to teach XSLT to students in UK!

Here are the main changes since the 2.1 release:

  • XSLT-process now uses Saxon 6.5.2, Xalan 2.4.1 and FOP 0.20.4
  • Debugging using Xalan is now fully supported.
  • Both JDK 1.3 and 1.4 are supported.
  • During debugging sessions the output produced by executing the stylesheet is serialized immediately, then displayed and incrementally updated in an Emacs window.
  • Added parameter passing to the XSLT processor. These are parameters that are specified to all the stylesheets, in addition to any other parameters. They are specified through the customization menu.
  • Logging output, error messages, etc. generated by the FOP processor are displayed in the *Messages* buffer. The level of logging can be customized.
  • Improvements to the display of information during debugging.
  • MacOS X is now a supported platform, in addition to Linux and Windows 2000.

More magic from James Clark: He's announced the alpha release of nXML, a new mode for editing XML documents from within GNU Emacs. It's a milestone in that it's the first open-source editing application to enable context-sensitive validated editing against Relax NG schemas. It also provides a clever mechanism for real-time, automatic visual identification of validity errors, along with flexible syntax-highlighting capabilities -- and many other features planned for future releases.

Menu gone for now

Menu gone for now 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

I've removed the menu on the top of the front page from the site for now. Since I launched it, I've been playing with it on and off, listening to feedback, and trying to determine whether or not it adds or substracts from the user experience of the site. When I got back from vacation, I loaded up kottke.org in the browser and just didn't like the looks of the thing sitting up there. Don't know why exactly, but since it still does that flicker thing in Firefox and doesn't work in Opera at all (thanks to everyone for sending in their fixes, BTW), it's probably for the best. I'm going to work on it some more and it will probably return in some modified form soon.
