New Year's revelers will have one more way to watch the ball drop this New Year's Eve thanks to MSN. The online service has struck an exclusive deal with New York City to become the "official" online provider for the event. But like television, the webcast will break periodically to allow advertisements.

Five Years In Jail For Putting A Movie

Five Years In Jail For Putting A Movie
Online
11/12/2003 09:04 PM
The latest Hollywood friendly law to be proposed by some Senators who have strong Hollywood financial backing would make it a felony to take a video camera into a movie theater or to put a film up on the internet, with penalties including up to five years in jail. Of course, we already have copyright law that covers this particular crime, but that's not enough for folks in Hollywood who seem to believe that the more you criminalize, the more people will want to pay you. Now, clearly, videotaping a film in the theater or putting it on the internet is illegal. But, I don't see how it requires a new law, or how anyone could possibly justify five years in prison for the action. The bill won't go anywhere as it's being introduced just as the session is ending, but it is likely to show up again next year. It will be interesting to see what happens when video cameras on mobile phones become more common. Will people be prevented from taking their phones into the theater as well? If someone wants to record a brief clip to send to a friend (which could be seen as promoting the film) will they get tossed in jail?

Ford Dumps Online Purchasing Software

Remember all those expensiv e new government computer systems that simply don't work (or made people cry by making the "save" process take 15 steps)? It's certainly not limited to the government sector. Ford is now admitting that they're dumping an internet purchasing system they bought from Oracle four years ago, after being unable to make it work with existing systems. Luckily, they kept the legacy system running, so they're just switching back to that. What's scary is that these stories don't seem that far off the norm. Almost everyone seems to have stories of multi-million dollar enterprise software systems that don't work.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

rcplanejan1.jpgThe remote controlled plane photography dudes went nuts on New Year's Day, and they've just compiled their aerial photographs from the US, Europe, and Australia. Seemingly none of them got arrested for being Al Qaeda cells or something.

We wonder where this will lead: every gadget finds its ideal application, and we're pretty much thinking the ideal application of RC photo-planes will be buzzing the Playboy mansion for overhead views of nekkid, partying Playmates.
