07/13/2004 01:39 PMHoward Rheingold, author of
Smart Mobs and a lot of other wonderful
books about the social effects of new technologies, recounts his
frustrating customer service experience when he took his broken Treo
600 to Sprint:
[T]he indifferent young man I talked to at the Sprint
store in the Bonair shopping center in San Rafael, California then
said that they didn't do repairs or diagnostics and didn't know who
did. He actually SURFED THE WEB to give me the phone number of Palm.
So I called Palm, who told me they could deal with everyone's Treo 600
except Sprint's. They directed me to a third party repair service
whose voicemail sends you to the web.

12/19/2004 03:36 PMA Life Where TiVo Has Always Existed
"...My daughter was only 3 months old when it arrived and
we set it up. As far as my daughter knows, TiVo has always been
around. Now that she (and our TiVo) are three years old, and there are
some very interesting things I've been able to observe.
First - she doesn't watch much TV (an allotted hour per day), but
when she does watch it, she gets a choice of a recent episode of any
of her favorite pre-recorded shows (current favorites are Dora the
Explorer and Caillou), and she can watch it at any time of day. We get
to choose what shows we'd like to allow her to watch, set up a Season
Pass, and we're done.
Second - Commercials are an infrequent novelty to her. We always
fast-forward through commercials, or watch non-commercial shows. When
she does occasionally see a full commercial, she's fascinated, and
will often ask us to stop so she can see what's going on. How can we
demonstrate to her the evils of commercial interruption, when she has
never had to experience it?
Third - Ignorance of Schedules/Programming - she has no idea when
her favorite shows are on, never has. She gets quite confused when we
are watching a non-TiVo TV, and she asks to watch 'a kids show', and
we have to explain that this TV won't do what ours at home does. We've
sometimes shortened this explanation to 'This TV is broken', which she
seems to accept, and will wait until we get home to watch our 'fixed'
TV.
Fourth - pausing taken for granted. She is now the master of paused
TV - saying 'Can you please stop this for a minute - I have to use the
Potty'....
I compare all of these observations to my TV-watching experience as
a child - always excited about Saturday Morning, because that's when
cartoons were on - swapping stories about the latest Evel Knievel
motorcycle I saw on a commercial with the other kids, knowing they had
all seen the same commercials as well. Feeling disappointed when my
parents would switch off a show mid-way through because they decided
it wasn't appropriate. The pain of commercial interruption, the
disappointment of 'nothing's on', or the missed shows that were
probably gone for good. (On a side note, anyone else remember the days
where if you missed a movie in the theater, you'd never get a chance
to see it again?)
There are a lot of other home entertainment developments that have
changed since I was a kid, but none so radically as the TiVo
experience. I never cease to be amazed when I'm zooming past a
commercial with a woman dancing with a 'swiffer', and I hear my
daughters small voice say: 'Wait Papa, I wanna see that'." [Eintagsfliegen
]
Kids growing up like this view their entertainment and multimedia
very differently than the rest of us. Heck,
as an adult I'm completely spoiled by this revolution, and the desire
for this functionality spills over into other mediums (why can't I
press a button to go back 7 seconds and hear what I just missed on the
radio or pause it?).
It's an interactive world for them, and they shift everything.

Should The Web Experience Be More Like
The Desktop Experience?
05/28/2004 12:41 PMThere have been many people who haven't been thrilled with the state
of the user experience within the browser. After all, as simple as it
is, it also has quite a few limitations - especially compared to the
typical "windows" (lower case) interface that people are used to on
the desktop. Still, this article at IT-Analysis seems
positive
ly stunned that some company has worked out a way to build a
windows-like interface in the browser. They even point to a
(somewhat buggy)
demo
shopping site, that basically shows how a company could create a
shopping site that feels more like a traditional client-server
application using windows and the ability to drag and drop products
into a shopping cart. It's an interesting interface, but all it
really does is move that traditional interface into the browser.
Plenty of other companies, like Macromedia and Laszlo Systems, have
been working on other interactive interfaces within the browser as
well - so this specific offering doesn't seem all that new or
different. Others have recreated traditional applications (such as
office suites) within the browser as well - so the idea of "drag and
drop" within the browser isn't really that new or exciting. Some web
traditionalists have problems with many of these systems because they
"break the web." There are benefits to having things like standard
URLs that you can send to other people and a traditional hyperlink
system. More advanced interfaces are sometimes nice, but, so far,
many of them seem to cause more problems than they solve. For
example, the sample shopping site above had some confusing buttons at
the bottom, and once I clicked on one, the whole window closed and now
the page refuses to reload. Not the most user-friendly shopping
experience.

Waiting for GPS
Waiting for GPS
01/09/2004 09:53 PM My GPS navigation system should arrive today. I forewent all birthday
and Chanukah gifts from my family in order to build up a fund for the
device, a Garmin 2610. It's a perky little number that sits on your
dash and tells you, in a silky voice that forgives all your
directional transgressions, how to get from A to B. I'm not a
particularly good driver to begin with, but I spend most of almost

It's All Over Now but the Waiting
06/22/2005 02:19 AMI’ve finally been able to post a few things because for the
first time in about three weeks, I’m not spending my nights
working on grants. In Illinois, 2006 LSTA grant submissions were due
Friday, June 17, so it’s all over but the waiting now. Which is
a killer, because I’m very excited about both of the grants MLS
is involved in.
- MLS
submitted a grant to create an online, statewide book discussion group
for audio ebooks called “One State, One Listen” by adding
simultaneous use titles from netLibrary/Recorded Books and OverDrive to ListenIllinois. Of course, I
think it would be totally cool, but we’ll see what the grant
reviewers think.
- MLS is also mentioned as a supporting
agency in the big gaming grant I mentioned last month. Aaron submitted the grant
under the Thomas Ford Memorial
Library, and we ended up with 23 participating libraries out of 35
applicants. Response was incredible, and I’m truly sorry we
couldn’t take every one of them. Everyone that read the grant
loved it, and we have some mighty big plans if we get it. This will
truly be something never before seen in the library
world.
So now we wait until September to hear back. I
don’t want to say much more until then, so light a candle for
us!

Oh, and
thanks to Su Bochenski for driving all the way to Springfield to make
sure they were there on Friday before the deadline!

PalmOne have
released an upgrade (1.12) for the Treo 600 Smartphone. I downloaded
it from the Orange UK website (there's a link from the PalmOne site
and Orange UK supplied the phone in the first place). After the
installation of the upgrade, the touch screen doesn't work. Without
the stylus/touchscreen a lot of software and phone facilities are
difficult, inconvenient or impossible to use. If this isn't just some
idiosyncrasy of my phone and software combination, Treo/Orange are
going to have a lot of hacked off customers out
there.

Why the Nokia 6600 Might Be Better Than
a Treo
12/19/2004 03:01 PM
Paul Boutin has a nice write up of the Nokia 6600
over at Slate, putting that relatively staid phone up against the Treo
650 and explaining why the generally less-impressive Nokia might be a
better choice for many. It all boils down to the beauty of Series 60,
to me. Nokia may be a heartless ice queen running down freedom on her
iron, lawyer-pulled sleigh, but she makes an amazingly polished
operating system for phones. It's not as PC-like as Palm or Windows
Mobile, but it puts the phone functions first, instead of hidden
behind layers of intelligent abstraction. That's worth a
lot—especially when the phones are essentially free.
Plus there's still plenty of whiz-bang to be had from a Series 60
phone. People still marvel that I can get to a terminal on a Nokia
3650 and that phone is like two years old. (Thanks, John!)

Treo 600 Review
01/05/2004 01:08 AMI've finally gotten around to posting about my experiences
with the Treo 600 in an essay called Life in the Treo Lane. The great thing about this device
is that it confirms most of what I've been writing about for the last
two years. I am truly shifted now!
Of course, this has brought home to me even more how woefully
lacking library services are in a shifted environment, and I'll be
doing a second write-up of how they look on the Treo. In
fact, I'm thinking of submitting it as a presentation at the ILA Conference this fall because
too few librarians have actually seen how their services look on a
smartphone, and this is one way I could show them, even taking URLs
from the audience. See, I could do that at ILA because I wouldn't have
to rely on the conference center for internet access! (Assuming I can
get a strong enough signal in the conference room....)
I've also updated the list of What's on My Treo 600, and I'm pretty close to maxxing
out the memory on it, both internal and external. Hopefully I'll get a

07/30/2004 09:56 AMI'm a fan of both the Sidekick and the Treo 600, so
when Levi Wallach wrote to tell me about his in-depth comparison
article featuring the two keyboarded messenger devices, I immediately
did what any sane person would do and read it and then forgot to post
about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the
information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and
the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would
do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still
plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.
