“Google Inc. this year plans to offer an electronic-payment
service that could help the Internet-search company diversify its
revenue and may heighten competition with eBay Inc.’s PayPal unit, the
Wall Street Journal reported on Friday. “Exact details of the
search company’s planned service are not known, the report said, but
quoted people familiar with the matter as saying it could have
similarities with PayPal,…

04/10/2004 05:00 AMPrices are going up. It's common to find albums selling for $14 online
as opposed to that originative $10 mark, and the music industry is
finding that selling singles online hurts the bottom line.

Under the terms of some of the deals, the prices for some of the
most popular singles could rise to $1.25, according to sources
familiar with the negotiations. Songs have previously been priced at
99 cents across the board.
And, apparently, album
prices will rise even higher than the CDs cost in stores. Now there's
a way to encourage buyers.
Let's see. Charging more on a medium where the manufacturing costs are
zero -- now that's a way to encourage sales. Brilliant.

Chillits DJ sets online

David Pescovitz:

Chillits is an ambient music outdoor
festival that takes place every fall in Northern California. It's sort
of a scaled-down version of the UK's
Big Chill. All of the DJ sets from
Chillits 2004 are now online for our, er, blistening pleasure. The
mixes by my musical mentors, San Francisco's Nick Philip and DF Tram,
are just stunning. And yes, the
Brian Behlendorf
who also spun a really beautiful set is in fact the co-inventor of
Apache. I have Brian to thank for turning me on to post-Eno ambient
when we both interned at Wired in 1993. What DF Tram says about his
own set pretty much applies across the Chillits board: this music is
"best enjoyed horizontally."

The Problem With Online Music
The Problem With Online Music
07/04/2004 02:06 PMThe
New York Times today
hits the nail on the head: if you’re buying music over the
net, you’re buying it in severely damaged condition. When I plug my
computer into the really good stereo at home, the difference between
the way music sounds coming off CD or vinyl or a
good FM signal, and
the crippled version from MP3 compression isn’t subtle. I used to
think that if you were listening to music on headphones on a bus or
train or plane or in a crowd, the MP3 lossage really didn’t matter
much. But recently I’ve been listening to the
Shure 3C phones,
and it’s obvious that we really shouldn’t be ignoring these
compression issues; in particular since
lossless
compression is available right here, right now.
