A Rogue By Any Other Name Still Stinks

A Rogue By Any Other Name Still Stinks 11/04/2003 12:52 AM
A rogue access point on a company that takes its wireless LAN security seriously still painful to detect: You can see how even with a strong set of policies, it's easy for an employee to subvert them. You might understand now why some companies have strict bag searches for employees entering and leaving the building. Those of you who saw the Al Pacino movie The Recruit will remember that one of the most plausible technology plot points involved a hidden USB hard drive. (Of course, CIA computers probably have their USB drives sealed and USB drivers set to restrict access, but you never know.) One of the factors that makes rogue wireless access points difficult to cope with is that local wired networks are often security free. This is changing, of course, with the rise of VLANs and secure fileserver mounting. The Recruit 2: Revenge of the Nerds will obviously feature someone with a micro-Wi-Fi-antenna....

While many people in the nautical world have told stories of large freak ocean waves for years, in the past most people had dismissed the seemingly unlikely rogue waves as myths. New oceanographic research, however, has validated these tales.

First, the Environmental Literacy Council provides an introduction to rogue waves (1). Students and educators can learn about the many mysteries that surround the giant waves. Next, the European Space Agency (ESA) describes its findings of the widespread existence of very large ocean waves that may actually be a leading cause of the sinking of large ships (2). Users can learn about the advantages of using radar satellites to investigate the oceans. The third website presents the MaxWave research project's investigations of low frequency wave fields, extreme individual waves, and wave groups for deep and shallow waters (3). While data is not yet available, users can download publications and find information on meetings, conferences, and international participants. At the fourth site, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) present its past and future investigations dealing with rogue waves (4). Visitors can learn how conventional wave measurements and their assumptions make it difficult to discover freak waves. The fifth site, produced by the Mount Washington Observatory, provides a text and audio report by Robin White on rogue waves and the destruction the deadly waves can create (5). Users can learn ways in which the waves may develop. Next, PBS furnishes a summary of rogue waves and identifies where they are more likely to occur (6). Visitors can find a variety of fun, educational animations including wave simulations. Lastly, the University of Texas at Austin provides a pdf scientific paper discussing research that has helped scientists to distinguish between freak and non-freak waves (7). Students and researchers can discover and view graphs of the joint time-frequency characteristics of a freak waves. How Not To Plea Bargain Your Way Out Of
An eBay Scam
04/05/2005 11:36 PM
Assuming that you stole nearly half a million dollars from people using the typical eBay scam methods (i.e., selling products you didn't own and buying products but never paying for them), and then mocked and insulted the victims of the scam when they accused you of scamming them, the fact that you were even offered a plea bargain as a way out seems way too nice. In fact, you would think that when more people came out to accuse you of scamming them after the plea bargain was set would make you shut up and take the punishment before things got worse. Apparently, one such scammer didn't think that way. Not only did he fight the idea that he should have to pay back the money he stole, he then screwed up the plea bargain by throwing a pitcher of water across the courtroom at the prosecutor on the day he was supposed to be sentenced. No wonder the judge said: "In my view, you are likely to perpetrate when you come out of incarceration." The only thing surprising is that the judge didn't put him behind bars for even longer.

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250 04/13/2005 08:26 PM

Earthlink Wireless is now offering the BlackBerry 7250, probably most notable for being one of the few BlackBerries with Bluetooth. It's still weird to think of Earthlink as a wireless carrier, but I was checking it out to see whose services they are reselling (it still doesn't say, although it's got to be Sprint or Verizon since the 7250 is listed as CDMA) and they've apparently been doing it to some extent since 2000. They didn't really get serious about it until this year, though, when they partnered with SK-Telecom.

In fact, since Verizon just got the 7250 a couple of months ago, I'm betting they resell Verizon. This post is short on facts but rich in the process of discovery.

The community push to syndicate every viewpoint, every post, through semi-interoperable standards like RSS and Atom has resulted in a dramatic shift in the media power balance; media organizations can no longer embargo certain topics, hoping they'll fade into the background noise. In most media organizations (newspapers, radio stations, etc.), you can find topics that are "blacklisted"; I'd never turn to Fox News to hear more about how Fox nearly sued itself over a Simpsons episode; I'd never turn to a corporation's blog to read more about one of their internal memos. In each case, I can rightly presume – these days – that they'll put their short-term interests ahead of longer-term goals, such as honesty and forthrightness. The problem with embargoes is that they have a dramatic effect, in a world where the media is controlled by a few,...

Future Directions 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
Future Directions Ok. This is sort of a conversation with myself over what features to add next and trying to codify my thinking. Input is quite welcome though, just leave a comment. Fact: Users like simple clean search UIs. Response: True. All search engines are moving this way. Fact: Users enter simple queries Response: Means that they will get too many results Fact: Search overload happens Response: Add a "Filter" widget to the top of a result set so people can reduce the search results to something manageable Fact: RSS feeds expire items as they flow off the home page Response: One search filter option could be Filter Old, Filter Current, Filter to Only Today (I know the english ain't right) Fact: Filters need to be successive Response: Sigh but yup. Fact: People know the google search variables Response: I should support them for use with 3rd party engines / meta searching, etc. Improving on them is worse except in the context where options don't exist. Fact: An XML-RPC api is a frothy good thing Response: That'll take longer but ok. Note to self: Check out Keith Deven's library for this Fact: Language detection is needed Response: Good ideas in that post. Thanks all ! Fact: Need a preferences tab so you can set one or more rss urls to never be shown or searched Response: Yup. I sense php sessions coming shortly for faster development. Fact: Must move to an AND'd search. Response: In progress Fact: Take into account changes.xml analysis for generating frequency of change metrics Response: Partially done Fact: Opml loader needed Response: Most of the loader code is written. Dealing with non-valid opml isn't yet. " are delimiters not part of the damn name element! (or that's my thinking) Fact: Ability to view a properties sheet for a feed would be useful Response: Tie into changes.xml metrics Fact: Add and index rss in real time Response: Mostly done but needs error handling and prettifying. The separate indexing process is eliminated Fact: Restrict search to my own blog would be useful Response: Heck I want this if nothing else Fact: Generate search results in RSS Response: Other than concerns about server load, that's cool Fact: Need ability to restrict searches to just entries in my opml file / blogroll. Response: Yup. Needed. Question: Should I be worrying about integration w/ aggregators? Answer: Unknown. Example: Search from within NNW. Question: Is integration w/ blogging tools interesting? Answer: Probably. Andy has already asked for it for Blozom Need to think here. That's a start on a rough core dump of what little brain I have left. More later. Clearly I'm thinking in a model of "Oversearch and then subtract". That resonates with me. Comments? Other things are still summarized in comments here not in this post. I'm particularly curious as to what features people think they need immediately versus later.

Directions on Microsoft

Directions on Microsoft 07/10/2004 08:23 AM

I came across this site tonight and thought hey that's cool a company that digs up information and news on Microsoft. Went looking for the RSS feed and ended up on a FAQ page and found a subscription to this service is $795.00 a year for an individual. I am honestly quite shocked so I am now on a quest to talk to someone that actually has a subscription to this service. With literally 100's of people digging up info on Microsoft and publishing it for free and with Channel9 producing great info. I just wonder if this company is in danger of losing subscribers to sites like ours. So if you pay this company their ridiculous subscription fee is it worth it. [www.directionsonmicrosoft .com]
