If you run, build, or design power plants for a living, this might be your day. MathWorks has announced the availability of SimPowerSystems 3, the latest version of their tool for modeling and simulating power systems. The software provides electrical engineers with the ability to analyze power system behavior in advance of the construction of costly physical prototypes. SimPowerSystems 3 has the ability to model and simulate self-contained power systems in everything from a car to a power generating plant.

Pixels 3D 5.0 doesn't provide the ultimate tool set for creating 3-D animations and still images. But at $399, it's certainly an excellent choice for beginners. And it may be a reasonable option for professional artists who don't need the elaborate features of high-end, and more expensive, 3-D tools. By Sean Wagstaff (Macworld via MyAppleMenu)

NewsFactor - When purchasing a Gateway E series PC, you're given the option of selecting which of several packages you'd prefer: "value," "performance," "productivity" and so forth. Opting for the Value Series, I expected a relatively powerful machine with a reasonable price tag. Unfortunately, Gateway seems to have a different view of "value," as the Gateway E-4100 Value Series turns out to be not much of a bargain.

Aiptek PocketDV 4100 07/16/2004 05:02 PM

aiptek_4100.jpg imageIt's probably not going to give you the same sort of visual fidelity of a nicer camera, but for $230 the new AIPTEK PocketDV 4100 looks like a fun diversion, with a 4-megapixel sensor and a 1.8-inch color LCD screen. Keep in mind that the 4100 doesn't use tapes. Instead, it has a Compact Flash slot that supports, well, as much Compact Flash as you can afford. I suspect that the 4-megapixel sensor is actually 4-megapixel this time, instead of the 2-megapixel CCD that's in the SD-card-based PocketDV 4500 that is just interpolated up to 4-megapixel. (Thanks, Mike!)

The Coolpix 4100 will also take SD cards for additional storage and should be price around $300. One thing I love about Nikon is that they tend to release their own underwater housings for their cameras and the 4100 will be getting one, as well. Even though many 3rd party housings are just as good or better, it's usually a lot easier to buy from the manufacturer.
