Unite your Linux and Active Directory
authentication

Unite your Linux and Active Directory
authentication
12/19/2004 03:46 PM
Authentication is easily one of the most critical services provided by your network infrastructure. It is the gatekeeper for every resource on your network. Workstations, applications, printers, and files would all be open to the world without a system of ensuring that only those people who need any given resource can gain access to it. Once you have accepted the fact that you need authentication, you must decide whether to stay with one network operating system in the interest of a completely homogenous network, or accept a "best of breed" system that will better fulfill your needs, even though it will complicate your environment. If you choose the second option, often times you are left with a management nightmare, where you have two, three, or even more authentication engines to maintain across your network operating systems.

No More NT Auth on Intranets

No More NT Auth on Intranets 09/07/2004 01:05 AM
A bug that has long been a pain in the ass to web developers and corporate intranet users alike, Bug 231529 - Optionally enable unprompted NTLM authentication has been fixed! That means that if you try accessing a local webserver, Mozilla won't prompt you for your NT username and password. This is a great fix, since it's issues like this that can prevent deployment of Firefox in corporate environments. The fix will be in for 1.0, which should be out next month according to the Firefox 1.0 Roadmap. [via Mozings]

PHP Auth 1.1 (Stable) released

PHP Auth 1.1 (Stable) released 07/09/2002 11:33 PM
PHP Auth is a very flexible framework for PHP applications that is loosely based on phplib. It requires PHP4 session support. The main difference between PHP Auth and phplib is the improved auth class. Additionally, PHP Auth includes support for user registration and user-level and admin-level account administration (change username, password, etc.). It currently has support only for MySQL, however, the database functionality is completely abstracted away from the rest of the code, so changes for other database systems should be trivial.

An open-source directory management tool

An open-source directory management tool 06/11/2004 03:45 AM
For the developer - whether an in-house member of staff, a part-time coder, an independent one-man shop, or someone involved with writing applications and services for major vendors - the problem of finding a directory to hold identity information isn't difficult. In fact, it isn't a problem. All the major directory vendors have programs to supply free copies of their directories to developers. But even if you don't qualify for one of those programs you can still download, for free, the OpenLDAP directory. However there is a problem with some of these programs and services: How do you administer the directory outside of your own application?

Listing Your Site on Open Directory
(DMOZ)
12/24/2004 12:53 PM
"The Open Directory Project (aka “DMOZ”) represents an excellent free alternative to paying for a Yahoo listing. An “open source” community-edited service, Open Directory has grown larger than Yahoo’s aging offering. Since many “portal sites” and “start pages” include the Open Directory listings as their own Yahoo-like service, a good listing on the Open Directory can often directly send more qualified traffic than an equivalent listing on Yahoo’s directory."
