06/10/2004 09:54 AMFinding the shortest distance between two points sounds easy enough,
but computing that route takes too long and consumes too much computer
memory. Researchers at Microsoft Corp. are tackling the problem so
that, in the next few years, computers can map the fastest route as
well as make fast adjustments for road work or traffic jams, said
Michael Schroeder, assistant director of Microsoft Research's Silicon
Valley lab here. It comes down to developing a better mapping
algorithm, one efficient enough to do massive computations in the palm
of someone's hand.

Court Opens Garage Doors, But Sets Murky
Precedent
09/01/2004 04:06 AMThe Court of Appeals has upheld an earlier ruling saying that it's
not a
violation of the DMCA to create garage door openers that get
around manufacturer controls designed to force buyers to go back to
the original company for replacement openers. A lot of analysis is
coming out on this one for a variety of reasons -- but, basically both
the case and the decision are both incredibly complicated and
incredibly important. The court basically wants to establish some
sort of balancing "test" for the DMCA. However, the DMCA and certain
decisions associated with it are fairly problematic to begin with, so
the test is somewhat convoluted and not entirely reasonable. The good
part is that the court seems to recognize just how troublesome the
DMCA is as written. The problem is that they don't really know what
to do about it to bring it back in line with where it should be to
avoid its misuse for anti-competitive purposes. It sounds like a bit
of cognitive dissonance as the court tried to resolve the realization
that the law really was as bad as some made it out to be with the idea
that Congress couldn't possibly have meant for it to be that bad.

Virus continues spread, launches attack
02/10/2004 02:47 AM
The MyDoom virus, which has been racing across
the internet for the past week,
continues to spread. As analysts had predicted, unremoved copies
of the program
began a distributed denial of service attack yesterday on the Web
site for the SCO Group.
SCO has received attention for its high-profile campaign to win
licensing fees from Linux users, whom, SCO argues, are using some code
to which SCO claims patent ownership. The DoS attacks are coded to continue
through February 12th. In the meantime, SCO has set up an alternative site .
However, the SCO attack might be a ruse, a misdirection, or only
one component of a larger strategy: to set up
distributed relays for sending spam .
A variant virus is also operating, and is coded to attack Microsoft's home page. Its infection
rate has been minor, however.
