about making a tool that lets him build user interfaces in layers. He
wanted to know who to talk to on the Visual Studio team to see if they
are interested. I said "put it on your blog cause more Visual Studio
program managers are likely to see it that way than if I went over to
building 42 and went door-to-door. He took me up on that and here's
his idea.

works with Adobe Systems Inc.'s recently released Acrobat 7 Portable
Document Format (PDF) creation software. PdfLayerMaker lets you create
layers for page objects like text, graphics, images or objects using
different color spaces or transparency from directly within Acrobat 7
itself. The layers can be faded in and out, deleted, flattened or
merged. Callas offers pdfLayerMaker for Mac OS X and Windows for

Layers -- The "How-To" Magazine for Everything Adobe.
Each issue is dedicated to giving readers the latest step-by-step
tutorials, tips, and tricks for all of Adobe's design, video, and
photography applications.
What happened to Mac Design Magazine? Why the new
name?...Scott Kelby explains...
"The magazine has grown,
changed, and evolved so much over the past few years that the word
"design" doesn't really explain all that we are anymore. If you've
read us for any length time, you know we're also a magazine for
digital photographers, with digital photography news, tips, tutorials,
and camera and printer reviews in every issue. Plus, from the very
beginning, we've been the only Mac magazine to have an entire section
dedicated to digital video editing. But we found that most
photographers and video editors didn't really know that because they
don't generally reach for a magazine that has the word "Design" in big
letters on the cover."
The first issue of Layers (May/June) will be available on newsstands
nationwide on May 10, 2005, and is also available by subscription.

06/05/2005 11:47 PMI've removed the
menu on the top of the front page from the site for now. Since I
launched it, I've been playing with it on and off, listening to
feedback, and trying to determine whether or not it adds or substracts
from the user experience of the site. When I got back from vacation, I
loaded up kottke.org in the browser and just didn't like the looks of
the thing sitting up there. Don't know why exactly, but since it still
does that flicker thing in Firefox and doesn't work in Opera at all
(thanks to everyone for sending in their fixes, BTW), it's probably
for the best. I'm going to work on it some more and it will probably
return in some modified form soon.
