Griffin ships iTrip mini

Griffin ships iTrip mini 06/11/2004 08:11 AM
Griffin Technology on Friday announced that it is shipping its iTrip mini, an FM transmitter designed to work with the iPod mini. The US$39.99 device attaches to the top of the iPod mini and enables users to play their music through nearby FM receivers in cars, homes and elsewhere. The iTrip mini can broadcast on any available frequency, and is tuned from the iPod mini itself. It uses no batteries, drawing power from the iPod mini, and powers itself off automatically when not in use. When Griffin first announced the iTrip mini they said it would ship in July, so this news comes a month earlier than expected.

This fellow created an interesting amp design for an iTrip. Boing Boing reader Ian Meyer says, " He said that it would probably be capable of overpowering broadcast stations for a small radium (ie: enough to blast some Queen in place of the hippity-hoppity music that the guy in the car next to me is listening to loud enough to be heard for half a mile)." iTrip mini Available for Pre-order

iTrip mini Available for Pre-order 06/02/2004 08:56 AM

prod_itrip_mini.jpg imageLooks like Griffin Technology has released a version of the iTrip specifically for the iPod mini which they're calling, unsurprisingly, the 'iTrip mini.' The iTrip is an FM transmitter for the iPod which lets you broadcast to pretty much any FM station you want via a sometimes kludgey 'frequencies as songs' interface. No matching colors, though, as the iTrip mini will only come in white, topping your mini like a stick of deodorant. Still, I have an iTrip for my iPod, and besides the aforementioned interface weirdness, it definitely gets the job done. Griffin is taking pre-orders now for $40 and expects to ship in July.

iTrip mini Ships Early 06/11/2004 08:17 AM

itrip_mini_1.jpg imageGood news for everyone that pre-ordered an iTrip mini, the FM transmitter from Griffin Technology that is designed specifically to work with the iPod mini -- it's shipping a month early. How often does that happen? Well, I mean, I guess there was that time when the solids residue from that batch of 5,6-MeO-MIPT recrystallized faster than we expected from the EtOAc/hexane, but I guess, yeah, that was sort of a different trip altogether.

Griffin PodPod

Griffin PodPod 09/01/2004 09:36 AM

prod_podpod.jpgg imageGriffin's new PodPod isn't the first iPod cupholder - Belkin has one, as do others - but I suppose if you want to keep all your iPod accessories Griffin-branded, the new $10 unit is a good choice. It's a hold, for iPod or iPod mini, that fit in a cupholder. That's it.

Well, there's a place for the cords to spill out through the bottom, but still. At least they finally got that name out of the way. I wonder how long they've been sitting on that, trying to think of something to build that would match it.

imageGriffin Technologies has quietly put up the iBeam on their website (without the usual accompanying press release) of a pair of plug-in accessories that add a flashlight and a laser pointer to your iPod or iPod mini. The $20 pair of plugs (you can only use one at a time) come with caps for easy attachment to your keychain. I've no idea how good they are compared to their respective competitors, but I'm all about plugging things into the iPod - that's half the reason they're so great in the first place (and why its so hard for other companies to play catch up).

prod_earjams_main.jpg imageGriffin is selling a set of snap-on covers for the iPod's trademark white earbuds called the 'EarJams,' that convert the headphones into in-ear versions. And although they come with three different sized plugs and a carrying case, pricing them at $20 seems like it might just be expensive enough to encourage people to look for a new set of headphones. I guess Griffin is counting on the cachet of the white earbuds to carry the day (never mind that you can get a set of white Sony in-ears for like $40).

Griffin RoadTrip

Griffin RoadTrip 08/13/2004 09:06 AM

griffin_roadtrip.jpg imagePeripheral maker Griffin has announced the RoadTrip, a multi-function iPod unit that serves as both a cradle, charger, and FM transmitter with digital readout. While it's not the most attractive unit I've ever seen - the faux brushed aluminum and readout is kind of corny - just having a separate interface for the FM transmitter will probably make it a favorite for many iTrip fans who have found FM transmitting to be useful but the iTrip's playlist-based interface lacking. Even cooler, the FM Transmitter can be removed from the cradle and used, via USB, to broadcast sound from any Mac or PC, turning it into a sort of low-powered radio station, or an FM-band Airport Express (without the Wi-Fi).

Jim Griffin on un-b0rking copyright

Jim Griffin on un-b0rking copyright 02/11/2004 01:40 PM
Fantastic interview with Jim Griffin, one of the leading advocates of blanket licenses for online music, in The Register.
Broadcasting started out as a pirate technology. But as rights holders we'd rather not have bar owners and radio stations ringing us up and asking us for permission each time they wanted to play a song, because it would cost us more to answer than phone than it would gain us in revenue. So the US broadcast industry went to rights holders and created this bundled price with bundled choice, a sort of 'theme park admission fee' for content that allowed that cable operator, or satellite operator, or radio station, or bar to use the content without seeking permission.
