I'm Dreaming of a Wireless Christmas
(and Other Holidays)
01/26/2004 01:15 AMFree hotel Internet access hits fever pitch with 2,200 Holiday Inns
about to offer it: InterContinental Hotels Group will announce
tomorrow that most of its 2,500 hotels, including 2,200 Holiday Inn
and Holiday Inn Express properties, will offer free Internet access by
the end of the year, the Wall Street Journal reported. The article
doesn't note if any of it is Wi-Fi or not, but points out that 70
percent of Holiday Inn's guests are business travelers. This latest
edition means that by the end of 2004, the majority of moderate
business-class hotels will have free wireless and wired in-room and
common room access. Some scattered independent properties and high-end
hotels (Westin, Hyatt, Marriott, Renaissance, and so forth) are
largely continuing to charge, although most are offering a $10 to $15
per night phone and Internet rollup with unlimited usage. [via Alan

There's been some pushback recently, in the .NET blogging community,
about Microsoft's habit of living in the future. For example:
It is abundantly frustrating to be keeping up with you guys right now.
We out here in the real world do not use Longhorn, do not have access
to Longhorn (not in a way we can trust for production), and we cannot
even begin to test out these great new technologies until version 1.0
(or 2.0 for those that wish to stay sane). I know there's probably
not a whole lot you can do, but this is a plea to you from someone "in
the field". My job is to work on the architecture team as well as
implement solutions for a large-scale commercial website using .NET.
I use this stuff all day every day, but I use the 1.1 release bits.
Here's my point, enough with the "this Whidbey, Longhorn, XAML is so
cool you should stop whatever it is you are doing and use it". Small
problem, we can't. Please help us by remembering that we're still
using the release bits, not the latest technology. [Michael Earls]
In the spirit of Michael's plea, I'm working on an upcoming article in
which I'll compare what was promised for the .NET platform (er,
framework), two and three years ago, with the current reality as it
exists today. Examples of the kinds of issues I want to consider:

Kyocera isn't
the only camera company taking hot fashion tips from Apple's iPod
mini. Adesso has a new line of new cameras that seem to match, at
least superficially, the green, pink, and blue colors of the mini.
However, in an interesting break from Kyocera's form, the Adesso
cameras seem to be exceptionally, well, crappy, with the high
end model rolling in with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. I guess hoping
for an LCD on the back of these is asking too much, huh? I think this
is one time when following the 'smaller is better' ethic is probably a
misstep.
Even worse? They're not even out. (Thanks,
Justin!)

Woes of Big Holidays
Woes of Big Holidays
12/27/2004 08:25 AM
Egad. One down, one more to go. I hate big holidays
because the big ones
are actually three in one: Blah Eve, Blah itself, and After-Blah
Sales Day.
On Blah Eve, my wife expects me to pay attention to her. That
means lots of
kisses and lip service. I wonder if the word Eve being the
name of the first
gal had something to do with this.
On the Blah Day, my wife expects me to pay attention to the
family. In modern
terms, this means doing far more TV watching than my usual 30
minutes a day.
The worst part is that TV programming really sucks on such
days. Radio is even
worse.
On the After-Blah Sales Day, my wife expects me to be
invisible. Actually she
is the one that does the disappearing act from dawn til dusk.
If I happen to
get up too early, I get the deathray look. This morning, I
got up just as she
was putting on her shoes to go out shopping. Oops.

The Blogosphere and the Holidays
12/20/2003 06:16 AM
First, if this time of year makes you cheerful, have a happy.
I'm pretty ambivalent. There are some things I like and some things I
don't. I see the pressure to buy for what it is. Pressure, which I
don't like, and commercialism, which I also don't like. I love buying
nice things, but almost no one knows how to do that for me like I do.
I suspect that's true of everyone.
One of the things I like about this time of year is that so
many people seem to have a time to do interesting and fun things. It's
like everyone gets a mini-sabbatical. It's time to go to a game, to
the movies, a museum, out to a long lunch or visit with a few bloggers
you haven't stayed in touch with. Next week I'm going to be in NYC.
Maybe there will be an opportunity to do some or all of that.
Randy Charles Morin sent a question about this. Does the
blogosphere pick up or go on holiday during the holidays? Here's what
I said.
1. I don't have any data, but I do have subjectives.
2. The actual flow goes down, around the 25th way down.
3. But the volume of real work goes up, because people have
time for projects that require attention or thinking, which they have
more of in the coming two-three weeks.
I've done some of my best work in this period in years past. My
first two XML projects, siteChanges.xml and scriptingNews format
(which became half of RSS 0.91) were hatched in December. Last year in
this time period I helped my parents get through a tough time. I was
telling my brother yesterday that I have fond memories of this, it
gave me a strong sense of purpose, and a sense that I made a
difference. That also happened during the holidays last year.
So mostly the holidays are good. I especially like it when
stress isn't a big part of it.
