Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates at the time said he did not see a music service as a money-making service.

pspupdater.jpg imageThe Register is reporting that Sony will be launching a new music service specifically for its PSP portable gaming system. The new download service is supposed to be in place by March here to coincide with the launch of Sony's player. Tony Smith speculates that the service, once in place, could just as easily be used to push video content down to the device, which doesn't have a hard drive, but can accept flash MemoryStick in 1-2GB sizes—plenty big for a couple of movies.

I think if Sony's got a shot at the iPod, the PSP is it—it can do almost everything you'd want to do while on the road, including productivity stuff (if they release a keyboard).

According to analysts given a peek at the store, Microsoft's offering closely matches Apple's iTunes Music Store in design. 130 million Windows users will be prompted to update Media Player, and a button in the upper right corner of the software will lead them to MSN Music. Downloads from the store will be compatible with almost 60 portable music players, according to Microsoft.

Is There Any Company At All Who Won't
Launch Their Own Music Download Store?
12/08/2003 03:33 PM
Okay, someone make it stop. Last week I mentioned HP's plans to open their own music download store and wondered if there was any tech company that wasn't planning their own music download store. Apparently, I was too narrow in my focus. Coca-Cola has announced plans to offer a music download store as well. It's beginning to feel like the "feature" that everyone wants to add. "Oh yeah, our website has a spinning logo, a store locator, search functionality, customer self-service, and, of course, our own music download store." Of course, this will be like every other download music store with silly limitations and bad pricing, but that's the way things go. It's difficult to see what benefit an outfit like Coke stands to gain. It's way (way) out of the core competency, and most of these stores have been shown to act as loss leaders for other products (like music players). I'm not sure how music becomes a loss leader for soda. I'm sure there will be many more similar announcements before some sense of sanity is reached, and companies start shutting down or merging all of these download stores into just a few entities. Having all of these separate stores with different restrictions does no good.

iTunes Music Store nears UK launch

iTunes Music Store nears UK launch 06/07/2004 12:24 PM
The Register sp eculates that Apple may be ready to launch their iTunes Music Store on June 15th. Invites have been sent out to national newspapers to expect an ‘major’ announcement on that day. Apple’s WWDC is on 28 June. Mac OS X 10.4 (“Tiger”) will be previewed (and perhaps new hardware?), so it seems unlikely that the 15 June announcement centres on Apple’s computing technology. The German version of iTMS is also expected to launch on this date (no doubt with the complete David Hasselhoff back catalogue), adding to the expectation.

German company RapidSolution Software has released the Windows software Tunebite. Music tracks purchased from the Internet are copy-protected and involve important restrictions for many users when they are played back. With the option to re-record them while they are played, Tunebite legally provides the user with new music files without restrictions. This ensures that music bought from Apple iTunes, Sony Connect, AOL or other music platforms in the Internet can be played back and listened to from everywhere. [PRWEB Sep 13, 2004]
