Review: Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±R/RW drive

Review: Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±R/RW drive 03/08/2004 11:21 PM
CDFreaks has posted another thorough review, this time for Pioneer's new DVR-107D dual format 8x recordable DVD drive. One of the most popular drives on the market right now, does CDFreaks think it deserves its success? Here's a snippet from the review:
The main positive points
The drive supports 8x DVD-Writing for both DVD-R and DVD+R and it support 4x DVD-ReWriting for both DVD-RW and DVD+RW. And it’s pretty fast, a full DVD-Disc is written at around 8 minutes and 30 seconds at 8x speed. And the writing quality is very good for most types of discs. The build quality of the drive also feels good. It also supports reading and writing of 99 minutes discs.

The main negative points
We think that many will find it annoying that no 4x DVDR discs works at 8x writing speed and that few 8x DVDR discs works at 8x. We did also expect the media compatibility to be almost perfect since it’s almost perfect with the older DVR-106 drive, but there were quite a few discs that the drive was unable to detect. Another serious issue is the CD-RW writing problems; Many drives have problems reading the discs written by the Pioneer DVR-107D and the CD-RW discs becomes unusable after few times of use. And it has problems reading less than perfect discs, especially pressed DVD discs seems to be a problem, another reading issue is that reading DVD-RAM discs does not work in most cases. And it has very weak backup capabilities for both Games and music discs.
You can check out the entire review over at the CDFreaks web site.

Macworld review: 15-inch PowerBook G4s 10/29/2003 03:24 AM
Eight months after Apple announced its smallest and largest PowerBook G4s -- the 12-inch and 17-inch PowerBook G4s, in aluminum, not Titanium -- Apple released the laptop many professional Mac users had been waiting for -- the aluminum 15-inch PowerBook G4. With its slick performance, bright screen, and support for USB 2.0, FireWire 800, AirPort Extreme, and Bluetooth, this laptop was worth the wait. But people who've received PowerBooks with loose latches or video problems may wish that Apple had taken a bit more time to iron out kinks.

If you needed any more proof, check out these pictures of this burnt and charred 12-inch Powerbook, caught in an apartment fire, which despite the damage and encrustations is reported to still work. What can we learn from this? In a kickboxing match between Jesus and Jobs, Steve would win. I know it's shocking, but if there's one thing I've learned from Internet, it's that digital pictures cannot lie. They don't even have tongues! (Thanks, Marcus!)

P-P-P-Powerbook

P-P-P-Powerbook 05/13/2004 10:46 PM
An American Ebay seller realises a European bidder is trying to scam him out of a Powerbook (fake escrow site, hijacked ebay account), so he sends him something far better, a P-P-P-Powerbook! Now, for you non-techies here, a factory model p-p-p-powerbook weights half what it's competitors weigh, comes with an A4 screen, the latest in internet adventure software, zero boot time, a fullsize keyboard (often with Key RedundancyTM) and a state-of-the-art laser bluetooth mouse. This is technology. The seller posts to a forum and amongst the chatter people follow the package via the the Fedex tracking page and some even visit the delivery address (a barbershop/internet cafe) and take photos, video, and a seat for their hair cut. The duty tax on this particular p-p-p-powerbook is around £350 (paid for by the scammer) before he sees the package, and a few days later it's released by Customs as they watch in anticipation. A forum member arrives at the internet cafe, takes a seat and soon the package arrives. The scammer opens the box and there are angry raised voices heard. The barber doesn't understand what's wrong and asks... "Is it broken?"
