10/29/2003 04:59 PM
Destineer Studios subsidiary MacSoft on Wednesday released an update to Unreal Tournament 2003, their popular first-person shooter. The patch -- version 2225.1, according to its read me file -- adds a variety of enhancements, including performance improvements. Ryan Gordon, the game's Mac developer, claims that performance improvements of 25 percent or more compared to the retail version are typical, thanks to optimizations, lots of new Altivec (or Velocity Engine) code, and a completely rewritten sound subsystem. Single CPU systems get the most improvement out of this version, according to the developer notes.

How Do You Fight Spam?

How Do You Fight Spam? 10/30/2003 11:46 PM
While Congress wrestles with the latest plan for anti-spam legislation, plenty of people are doing their best to get around the spam problem themselves, by using various filtering technologies. Here's an article detailing the methods that many people use - suggesting that spam filtering is pretty effective. I know it's done wonders for me, though, it is still a pain. I use three levels of spam filtering at this point. SpamCop and SpamAssassin on the server side catches the vast majority of spam - so that I don't even need to download it. On the client side, I use PopFile, which does a good job of sorting out the few spam messages that do go through. So, these days, I get about 200 to 250 spam messages a day, with about 10 to 15 getting through the server, and one or two making it into my inbox. On the whole, that's pretty manageable. Of course, the amount of spam has increased tremendously in the past few months (it had held steady at 100 messages/day for a while) - and I do wonder how well the filters will hold up under greater loads. Still, it's interesting to see what other solutions people have put together to push away the spam.

I'm not sure why this is online now, but someone who prefers to remain anonymous just sent me a link to a NY Times Magazine article that's supposed to come out on Sunday explaining the position of those who are afraid of the direction copyright is headed in and are fighting to change the way copyright works. If you're a regular reader of this site, you'll (of course) recognize a lot of what we talk about here on a regular basis. While I don't agree with everything they say about copyright issues and worry a bit about how they paint it as a "movement", it's still good to see this type of positive press coverage of many of the issues.
