Canadian Legion: "We own all uses of
the word 'poppy'"
08/06/2004 11:33 AMMy friend Pia makes custom hats in British Columbia. One of her hats
is called the "Poppy" for its red, petalled character.
The Canadian Legion sells plasic poppies every year to raise money for
charitable causes. This week, Peter Underhill of the Canadian Legion
left this on Pia's public guestbook:
I tried your contact email but the address wouldn't copy. The "Poppy"
is a trademark registered to the Royal Canadian Legion. Please remove
reference to Poppy on the Poppy Hat. Thank you for your consideration.
P. Underhill
If the Legion thinks that shaking down craftspeople on bogus trademark
claims is the way to create goodwill for its causes, it's got another
think coming.

Steve Jobs
wants to tear down his home. But there's a problem. It's a
George Washington Smith-designed 1926 Spanish
Colonial Revival house (mansion?) in Woodside, California, and
preservationists feel it has historical significance. Jobs replies
that he'll build something that will eventually become "more
historically interesting" than the present property. (Given his
penchant for
the steel and glass of
I.M. Pei, that seems questionable.) But should he not have the
right to do what he wants with his property? Tear it down, paint it
purple, or fill it to the roof with Jell-O; whose business is it other
than the homeowner?

Castle Way, Southampton
10/29/2003 12:10 AMI have just been out with my laptop not 5 mins ago, as i live next to
the tower block in castle way, southampton, which is opposite the
housing benefit office. There are a couple of office blocks at the end
of my road, one of them being fanshaw lofts, the accountants, whilst
standing at the end of my road opposite these offices, i was able to
pick up 3 AP's one of them being a LAN which was perfectly happy to
allow me to browse the office network of Askey Computer Corp. and also
surf the web at 1Meg which is much better than my 512k DSL in the
flat. SSID's For the AP's are: IEEE 802.11 LAN - which is the afore
mentioned ASKEY COMP. CORP the second being Epeople, this one i didnt
browse as i was having loads of fun with askey and also SSID:
SOUTHAMPTON which is WEP encrypted, would not be half suprised if the
encrypted is not the housing benefit offices!! Hope this proves to be
useful to someone other than me. i shall certainly use askey's LAN
again for as long as it allows me especially when i got a large D/L to
complete

06/24/2004 11:22 AMCryptography is the mathematics underlying computer security. While a
Ph.D. in cryptography is hardly a requirement for keeping one's
systems secure, an understanding of the basics helps in decision
making about security, both for system administrators and IT managers.
In this article, I present a non-technical overview of a few key
concepts in cryptography that are relevant to consumers of security
solutions. I then look at some widespread myths about cryptography,
and give some advice on practical matters relating to cryptography.

06/28/2004 11:25 AMSince HG Wells first published his lauded exploration of racial
identity, Invisible Man, people have been entranced by the myth of
invisible men--be they heroes such as Invisible Woman of the Fantastic
four, or villains such as Hollow Man's Sebastian Caine. But is it
truly a myth, or do invisible men walk among us? And if an invisible
man were to be created, how would we detect him and track his
movements?

The world's first computer network using quantum
cryptography to secure information is now
operating in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area. The Quantum Key
Distribution network is
significantly more secure than traditional cryptography.
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency( DARPA ) supported BBN Technology 's work on this. On a
historical note, BBN built the first compontent of the internet, back
in the 1960s, also with DARPA (then ARPA) funding.
