OpenOffice Furore

OpenOffice Furore 09/17/2004 03:04 AM
My goodness, there are oceans of w ords being pumped around about some subclauses in the Sun-Microsoft agreement. I love Slashdot’s editorial judgment but despise the idiotic discussion threads, so suffice it to say that the usual people said the usual things there about Sun and Microsoft and litigation; but then check out Danese Cooper’s take. Anyhow, I think it’s sensible to be concerned about the potential threat. Of course, that concern would vanish if Microsoft were to state that they won’t use intellectual-property litigation as a competitive weapon against other office-software packages. Simple enough. How about it?

Xeni Jardin: Following up on last week's post about the Sri Lankan sensation who plays bongo with her lingo, Boing Boing reader Pablos says: "M.I.A. was scheduled to perform at Chop Suey in Seattle tonight. Apparently she is having some kind of Visa trouble and her show has been cancelled. "

Some speculate the incident may relate to her father's affiliation with a Sri Lankan rebel group designated as a terrorist organization by the US. No news on her site or newsfeeds yet, but she's also scheduled to play at SXSW this week.
See also this extensive Pitchfork interview with Ms. Maya Arulpragasam. It says, among other things, that "bloggers love her." Link (thanks john martin and High-C)

Check Your Visa Transactions On The Card
Itself

Check Your Visa Transactions On The Card
Itself
04/29/2004 05:04 AM
Smart credit cards with built in chips never really took off in the US as was expected, but Visa is apparently experimenting with an even smarter credit card. They're testing cards that actually contain a tiny display screen on the card itself. The idea is that you could check your balance or your recent transactions directly on the card itself. The screen runs off of the smart card chip that no one was using before. Right now, they say the display-in-cards are a bit too fragile, but they expect to figure out how to make them more durable by next year. Of course, the other problem is that such tiny, flexible, durable displays built onto a credit card are going to be quite expensive. There are also some concerns about what data to show, and how to keep any sensitive data private. Perhaps this could work with the voice activated credit card everyone was talking about last week - though, you have to imagine that's only going to make the price go higher. Of course, as various wireless companies are working on ways to build payment technologies directly into the mobile phone, some may wonder why they need an actual credit card (smart or not) at all.

Xeni Jardin: Ernest Miller says,
A couple of days ago BoingBoing posted a story about the harrassment Jeremy Wright, who is Canadian, faced when he told US Immigration officials that he was a blogger. Although it is unclear why he was treated so poorly by US government officials, one possible explanation is that, as a blogger, he is also a journalists. Journalists, even from friendly countries, are required to have special "I Visas" that normal tourists are not required to have. Journalists without these visas have beeen similarly harrassed. Maybe we ought to change that law.
