Best Christmas Destinations

Best Christmas Destinations 12/08/2003 05:52 AM

Where Would You Send Someone You Love For Christmas? If you had unlimited funds, what would be your Hannukah or Christmas present for someone you thought really deserved one? For instance, our genial host and the owner of MetaFilter, Matt Haughey. A lot of us are presently eng aged in clubbing in to offer him a short visit to Iceland. y6y6y6 has even set up a website to solicit funds and suggestions, following enormous interest on MetaTalk. Well-known weblogs like boing boing and ani ldash are chipping in too. isn't it time we showed our appreciation? (Matt, please don't read or delete this!)

Kitsch destinations of Lynchburg, VA

Kitsch destinations of Lynchburg, VA 05/05/2004 02:48 AM
This collection of kitsch things to do in and around Lynchburg, VA is very, very good -- who knew the region had so much to offer? My favorite is the Gilligan's Island themed bed-and-breakfast:
Accommodations on the island include your very own bamboo hut, similar to those seen on the classic 60's TV series. You will also enjoy only the best in fine dining and libations. (Hint: Don't miss Mary Ann's coconut cream pie for breakfast!)

While on the island, sit back and enjoy the show, as the friendly cast members perform any number of skits from the show. You probably know all the plots, so feel free to join in the fun. And don't be surprised or frightened to see an angry native warrior or two from one of the nearby islands!

A Very Merry Christmas 12/25/2003 02:02 PM
This is the BEST Christmas ever. I got everything I wanted and gave everything I could. It's been absolutely magical - and the day just started. After all is said and done, I'll list the loot for ya. I'm very happy, my friends - and I hope that your day / season is turning out to be just as magical....

So in the spirit of the times (sussing great gift ideas), I've convinced an old friend, and my former Dean, to spend a couple days in this space talking about his new book, In Perilous Times. Starting Wednesday, Geof Stone will be blogging here about the book. It is a great and amazing history, both optimistic and depressing. It will be Geof's first time blogging, so please make him welcome. And were I to use this space to self-promote, I might point to Businessweek's pick of the top ten books of the year. But I won't waste your time with that.

Spyware you do not want to get for
Christmas!
12/22/2004 01:44 AM

As I was installing my Creative Labs PCMCIA sound card, I was shocked to see the amount of "GARBAGE" creative labs tried to install or place in my bookmarks on my PC. Luckily my Spyware program caught all of it and I was able to have it removed before it could become a issue.

Why would Creative do this. The items they were loading wasn't spyware but I sure did not ask for the bookmarks to various sites including AOL to be loaded. They should be ashamed of themselves and offer a apology to all Creative Sound Card owners. That card was not cheap and then they try to load my PC up with advertisments. Well I like the card but they need to be put on the who's naughty list.

Ziff Davis has a great article about some real nasty Spyware that you will want to avoid. Don't forget to included Virus Software, Firewall Software and Spyware Software with all of those PC's your giving or getting for Christmas. [ZDN et]

Too many Christmas lights? 12/10/2003 07:56 PM
Is there such a thing as too many Christmas lights? I love seeing lavish displays of lights at Christmas time. It seeks especially to address those deep levels at which we half-consciously shape technology and are shaped by it. What is half-conscious can, after all, be made fully conscious, and we can take responsibility for it..... Can we take responsibility for technology, or must we sleepwalk in submission to its inevitabilities?"
