A Patent On Virtual Re-Gifting

A Patent On Virtual Re-Gifting

A Patent On Virtual Re-Gifting 12/08/2003 05:51 AM

Almost everyone does it, though, most people won't admit it. It's regifting. You act very happy and appreciative towards the absolutely awful gift that some random person gets you, and then put it on a shelf somewhere until you can turn it around and give it to someone else (who, hopefully, isn't in any way connected to whoever gave you the gift). Now, someone has come up with a system to make the regifting process completely virtual. That is, when someone buys you a gift at a certain online store, before they ship it out, the store drops you an email telling you that the gift is on the way - and give you the chance to keep it, or pass it on to someone else. Since the gift needs to be sent out eventually, the system can be set in a hot potato fashion (whoever has it after five days gets stuck with it or if no one has accepted the gift by the 3rd hop, too bad). Of course, under some anti-spam laws, this system could be responsible for spam, since it sends emails to people who have no prior business relationship with them. Also, I wonder how many people will actually use such a system. Most people like for gifts to be actual gifts where the person has to open them to find out about them - and not read about them via email first.

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

Patent Office Agrees To Check Into All
That Prior Art On The Eolas Patent
11/12/2003 01:35 PM
The latest in the Eolas patent saga is that someone at the Patent Office has finally agreed to review the patent based on stacks and stacks of prior art that people have been finding. Amazingly, the Patent Office appears to have responded quickly (though, they don't say how long it will take for a new decision on the patent) to the requests for a re-examination of the patent. There's a quote from the USPTO's deputy commissioner for patent examination policy saying that this was an "extraordinary situation" which necessitated the quick response. The problem with this statement is that it's not an extraordinary situation. In fact, it's an increasingly common situation, where silly patents are getting the stamp of approval every day - and then used to hold other companies up for extortion, rather than for encouraging innovation.

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PM
I think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is that Adobe, who is no stranger to abusing intellectual property rules, is now being hit with a patent over their PDF technology. The patent is for a method of extracting network information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and having the system not only download the page in question, but all locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with PDF files.

Modem Tester
09/27/2004 03:30 AM
Richard C. Jaworski announces that the US Patent Office has granted his “Petition to Make Special” on his System of Testing the Upstream Cable Modem Channel (TUCMC) patent application. The petition to the US Patent Office alleged infringement of his technology by Acterna Corporation in their DSAM 2500 Cable Modem Test Instrument. Mr. Jaworski has written evidence that Acterna knew of the patent and the technology prior to releasing the feature in the DSAM 2500. According to patent law, triple damages are applicable for prior knowledge infringement as soon as the patent issues. Due to its special status, Jaworski expects the patent to issue in the immediate future. [PRWEB Sep 27, 2004]

Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't

Virtual Reference So Virtual We Couldn't
Use It
07/07/2004 01:15 AM

Another virtual reference failure tonight. Kailee was reading about Neti and Ditto, the cloned monkeys, when she asked if we could find a picture of them. After a couple of fruitless attempts on the web, I again suggested she try my System's virtual reference project since we still had 15 minutes before they "closed" for the night.

So we fired up the URL and after a couple of confusing attempts to connect, we waited for a librarian to "answer" our call. And we waited. And we waited. And we waited. We finally gave up and submitted the question via email, only to be told we'd probably receive an answer in 1-2 business days.

It's extremely frustrating to try to teach Kailee to turn to librarians online for help only to keep running into problems and dead ends when she actually tries to do this. If she didn't have librarian parents, I'll bet she'd be giving up on us now.

Virtual PC for Mac 7.0

Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 03/28/2005 01:09 PM
Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 is the latest version of this emulation program, and the first to be released by Microsoft after taking it over from Connectix. Installation is a two-step process, which takes about an hour. First, the Virtual PC must be installed, the computer restarted, then Windows XP Professional can be installed. In fact, you can install multiple versions of Windows (if you have copies) by setting up different virtual machines; you can then choose which virtual machine to start up. Upon launching Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 7.0, the standard Windows XP desktop appears, which can be run in a window or in full-screen mode. Toggling back and forth between Windows and Safari is easy. Within a separate Virtual PC Settings window, you can modify the virtual level of RAM and VRAM, the virtual machine's networking settings, and more. The main feature of Virtual PC is that it offers the Windows platform on a Mac. This can useful for browsing the Internet, or for web developers who need to see how websites look using both Safari and Windows. Microsoft's Virtual PC for Mac 7.0 website offers e-mail support, troubleshooting newsgroups, and a knowledge base of helpful answers to support questions. Virtual PC 7 runs best on a Power Mac G5; in fact, it’s been optimized for the G5. It can be installed on other Mac’s, but be prepared for slow performance. Spymac installed it on an older eMac with a 700MHZ processor. While the application is being used on a daily basis, it is incredibly slow. However, it’s still cheaper than buying and maintaining a real PC. Pros: Provides Windows XP on your Mac Easy to move back and forth between OS’s Cheaper than a PC Cons: Slow performance, especially with non-G5 computers Installation took too long If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.
