Keep It Down! Euro Noise Assault

Keep It Down! Euro Noise Assault

Keep It Down! Euro Noise Assault 12/08/2003 05:50 AM

A new European program is mounting a fight against noise pollution. The first step is to map noise levels in cities in 25 nations, followed by plans to dampen the din and quiet public grumbling about the non-stop rumble.

Claire Chanel, the person behind the Jay-Z Construction Set, has decided to net.judo-ify the RIAA's spoof tracks, random noise disguised as top-40 singles which it promulgates on the P2P netowrks.
As a follow-up to our last project, the Jay-Z Construction Set, Scary Sherman and I decided to take a fair & balanced route by highlighting one of the positive moves made recently by music industry leaders.

The RIAA-Mix Vol.1 is a compilation of the hottest underground remixes of top40 hit tracks produced by the upcoming talent at Overpeer. These homages to 20th century noise artists and avant composers pull a frightening bait and switch on listeners veering wildly from recognizable pop hooks to jarring digital distortion.

Available at riaamix.com as downloadable mp3s, streaming flash audio, or on a compact disc, we're hoping our compilation can help support the arrival of challenging new music to mainstream exposure.

The Republican propaganda mill, a brief history It's bigger than Bush vs. Kerry. It's about billionaire funded thinktanks (AEI, Heritage) paying columnists to sit around and make stuff up or legitimize crackpot theories (blacks are genetically stupid, japanese internment was okay). Furthermore its about radio, internet, blogs, tv news and publishing houses working in concert to pummel memes onto the American public. When this stuff infects your culture and is no longer the domain of the loons but now as mainstream as apple pie and Wal-Mart, what do you do?

Noise Control

Noise Control 06/22/2005 02:59 AM

Incidents like the one Dan Gillmor points to reminds me that I need to put more thought into noise control. Let see...

One idea is cookie sharing combined with cookie persistence. Cookie persistence works by allow people to download and save their cookies so they can restore valuable cookies after cookie wipeout or if they change machines. Cookie sharing is one cookie holder giving part of the rating they earned to another. It's like giving some of your voice to another person whose opinions you agree with or appreciate.

A lot of room for creativity in this area.

Update:

Flip-side of the Cookie sharing is mutual destruction which requires giving up part of your rating to degrade another person's rating. I am still clueless as to whether such small set of rules will lead to a stable world instead of something that will blow up. Still, I enjoy working with combining simple rules to build complex systems, probably because of my physics background.

Another thought I had was that, for systems like Wikipedia, unbiased views are sometimes either not possible or premature. In such cases, I think the right thing to od is to record multiple biased/opposing views to capture the conflict in its raw form instead.

Roland Piquepaille writes, "The Japanese Humanoid Robotics Project has produced the HRP-2 robot, which is known for dancing and preserving Japanese culture. But now, the HRP-2, which is about 1.6 meter high and weighs about 60 kilograms, can hear humans and understand them with its sophisticated software and hearing equipment. It uses an array of microphones consisting of eight omnidirectional microphones mounted around the robot's head. Stable speech recognition is obtained by combining information from the microphone array and a camera also mounted on its head, and by isolating and eliminating noises, even from your TV. These hearing capabilities are essential "for helping humans to communicate with robots in real environments by 2025." For more details and photos see Roland's blog. Also, see our previous story on the HRP-2 robot's dancing abilities.

imageNintendo's new DS handheld gaming system (which I've been told is pretty much out of stock everywhere, although Nintendo is supposed to drop another shipment on the 22nd) apparently dumps out video noise that can be picked up by some older, presumably unshielded televisions. That probably wouldn't necessitate an entire post, but Jim Younkin busted out his old Sony Watchman to test it, which is one of my favorite gadgets ever (I had a later model that I would often impress nerdy girls with on field trips for the 10 to 15 minutes that the batteries would last).

Troops get high-tech noisemaker : I need this to fend off my cat.

Dubbed "The Sound of Force Protection" in a company brochure, the devices can broadcast sound files containing warning messages. Or they can be used with electronic translating devices for what amounts to "narrowcasting."

If crowds or potential foes don't respond to the verbal messages, the sonic weapon, which measures 33 inches in diameter, can direct a high-pitched, piercing tone with a tight beam. Neither the LRAD's operators or others in the immediate area are affected.

If it can broadcast the soundtrack to my daughter's Barney video, then it may exceed its non-lethal status.

Keep Out The Noise, Stay Sane

Keep Out The Noise, Stay Sane 12/08/2003 12:58 PM
Noise pollution is a topic that you don't hear all that much about. However, over in Europe they've decided it's time to start tracking information on noisy urban areas, and soon, there will be noise pollution maps of most major urban areas in Europe. Some of them are already up on the web (here's Paris and London). The World Health Organization is worried that too many people are suffering from living under conditions with too much noise - and many don't realize the damage they're doing to their ears. They even claim that being subject to such noise constantly can "contribute to hypertension and heart disease, and may impair mental health." That's right. Your sanity may depend on how quiet your surroundings are. Now, the question is how to quiet the noise down. Not everyone agrees, but having the maps to indicate where the problem areas are could certainly help. Some people are talking about adjusting traffic patterns to try to help with the noise, but a more reasonable solution might be focusing on adding soundproofing to noisy areas where people live or work.

Helicopter versus airplane noise

Helicopter versus airplane noise 12/17/2004 06:36 PM

Helicopters that are descending with a fair amount of power produce an annoying sound called "blade slap".  Beginners are cautioned to avoid this condition because it leads to people on the ground complaining to the FAA about "those damned helicopters."  (One can avoid blade slap by lower the collective to descend more positively rather than drifting slightly down.)  A big turbine-powered helicopter flew over Harvard Square the other day, slapping away.  I was with a friend, call her "K", who hasn't spent much time in the work force.  I asked her whether she found the sound annoying.

"Helicopter noise doesn't bother me," K responded.  "I assume that it is a traffic helicopter or some sort of medical emergency.  What I really hate is airplane noise."

Why?

"Whenever I hear a big commercial jet overhead I think about companies sending their employees out for ridiculous meetings with each other where they will show vacuous PowerPoint presentations and have meaningless conversations."

Jawbone Telephone Headset

Jawbone Telephone Headset 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

Jawbone09_highres.jpg imageWow, from the tenor of their press release you'd think these guys conquered cancer or caught a fly in some chopsticks or something, what with their 'revolutionary's and their 'radical's and their 'breakthrough's; I was all hepped up, but it turns out the Aliph Jawbone is just a telephone headset, and a wired one at that, designed to filter out background noise and provide clear voice pickup even in noisy environments like trading floors. Now if Aliph had a commercial where this long-haired muscle man cleaves through legions of Canaanites with a giant-sized version of the headset, only pausing to look at the camera, covered in gore, as he raises his oversized Jawbone headset to heaven where, panning up, we see God dialing a number (maybe eating a hoagie and he has a Jets jersey on), and then right in the middle of battle Samson gets a call on his Jawbone headset and God can totally hear him above the din of battle, well, that'd be the sort of fucking awesome that's going to sell a $150 headset, people.

Of course, if they make an underwater housing for your camera, it would probably just be easier to buy that, and maybe a little more reliable. Also, just for the record, this will work with your pet turtle Sub Captain Sandy, but only for about three minutes or so.

The manufacturer has a wide array of products designed to facilitate communication wireless underwater, where radio waves are often soaked up and diffused by the water.

Can You Patent Purchasing Underwater
Options?

Can You Patent Purchasing Underwater
Options?
01/05/2004 04:56 AM
The latest in bizarre patent applications is a business model patent being applied for by JP Morgan for the concept of buying underwater stock options. How is this patentable? That's unclear, but the folks at JP Morgan think they've hit onto something. They think that many companies trying to help employees get rid of underwater options may sell them to Morgan - following Microsoft's lead (where Microsoft let employees switch over from stock options to restricted stock). Of course, now that the economy is starting to pick up again, companies (and their employees) may be more interested in holding on to their options. Either way, it doesn't explain how making a risky investment is patentable. It's certainly not an original idea. I remember discussing just such a business model with some people in 1998 - when we knew a few people who had left jobs where their options were underwater, and who had no interest in buying them. Of course, we realized that the risk of buying underwater options on a regular basis meant that it could be quite difficult to ever actually make any money - but the folks at JP Morgan are betting the market is turning around and are hoping to buy up now before anyone realizes it.
