CNN is a Dirty Bomb

CNN is a Dirty Bomb 09/19/2004 07:18 PM

I've no idea what this is.

« If Finnish artists made missiles, I'd guess that this is what they'd look like; the Puuinen KKKK. Tall. Erect. Pointy. Wooden. Geometric. Stylish. »

I've been thinking about going home to see the family I've not seen for nearly 3 years, but the presidential election's circus-like slimefest and fear-mongering, like the 'nuclear terror' special CNN ran tonight, gives me a migraine at the thought of entering American airspace since I figure if I don't get bombed out of the sky or get trapped in the US if something like a dirty bomb did happen, I'd get the "Welcome to Gitmo" travel package from the US customs guards when I refuse the anal probe on presentation of my passport. Dammit, I want to go home and have some Ted Drewe's frozen custard before they close for the season and get some real damn BBQ that you just can't get anywhere else even though plenty of places on the planet try to fake it. I dream sometimes about a big, thick, juicy porterhouse steak and cornbread. I crave food, folks and fun but, in spite of whatever the US media crackheads have been smoking to report 'the world being safer' thanks to the US military, out here in reality I'm just not sure that my desire to visit home exceeds my desire to not get in the way of some wackos when tensions are clearly on the rise. Perhaps I need to send a telegram to the people of America.

YO, AMERICA, NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT WHO SERVED WHERE AND WHEN AS DUMBYA HAS ALREADY BEEN PROVEN A LIAR AND HIS RATINGS STILL ARE BETTER THAN KERRYS STOP SHUT UP ABOUT THE FUCKING TYPOGRAPHY AND AUTHENTICITY OF THE STUPID FUCKING NATIONAL GUARD DOCUMENTS ALREADY STOP IT AINT HELPING STOP REALLY STOP PLEASE START ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT SHIT THAT MATTERS LIKE EDUCATION, ECONOMICS AND MAKING NICE WITH THE REST OF THE WORLD NOW THAT EVERYONE HATES US AND MOST OF US LIVING OUTSIDE THE US PRETEND TO BE CANADIANS WHEN ASKED [EXCEPT IN FINLAND DURING WORLD HOCKEY FINALS] STOP MAYBE TALK ABOUT ALL THE DEAD BODIES OR SOMETHING STOP ANYTHING ASIDE FROM THE COMPLETELY POINTLESS AND UTTERLY AGGRAVATING IDIOTIC EXERCISE IN TRYING TO OUTSNAGGLE THE SPIN MACHINE STOP GEORGIE WAS AN ALCOHOLIC DRUNK DRIVING COKE SNORTING LOSER WHOSE DADDY GOT HIM WHERE HE IS TODAY STOP GET OVER IT AS HE IS AN UPSTANDING CITIZEN COMPARED TO MOST FOLKS THESE DAYS STOP PLEASE SEND CHEEZE-ITS AND CORNDOGS STOP MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE BEFORE NOVEMBER STOP

New Kevin Sites dispatch from Iraq:
Dirty for Dirty
06/01/2004 02:09 PM
NBC combat correspondent and weblogger Kevin Sites is in Iraq today. He's just posted a new entry on his blog -- a series of interviews with American soldiers.
[O]nce they finally do get home--they will still be faced with the complex task of finding their way in a civilian society again. And while they're eager to leave their weapons and Kevlar behind, the violence they've experienced here will likely be with them in one way or another, always.

Derek Ellyson says his memories have already hardened, fixed in his mind. "You never forget the faces. I can describe to you every dead person I've seen out here. What their faces looked like, the position they were laying in." Sorokin agrees, "War brings a lot of ugly things, you see a lot of ugly things you see other people dead and sometimes when you see somebody dead you see the face of death--the way the guy died. It could be an enemy it could be an ally it doesn't matter."

Yet living with those images of death is part of the job--the same one that requires them to pull the trigger. Before going to war soldiers have always had to ask themselves if they'd be willing to die for their cause. But there is a second part to that question which for some, is more difficult to answer: would they kill for it? For most if not all in the 3rd Platoon--the question is already moot.

The Programming Soviet

The Programming Soviet 07/08/2002 02:38 AM
I had an aunt and uncle who were Communists until the end. They saw any flaw in the capitalist sytem as fatal, and they saw hope in the most tired and discredited leaders and systems (my uncle wrote an exultant pamphlet about Yugoslavia under Tito).

I am reminded of my aunt and uncle whenever I read an anti-Microsoft tirade from Doc Searls or Eric Raymond or another card-carrying command-line zealot from the programming Soviet. To these true believers, any Microsoft imperfection spells imminent collapse for the Redmond bourgeoisie. Comes the revolution, it will be from each according to his Open Source and to each according to his Unix. -- Arnold Kling

I don't agree with everything that Arnold says, but it's a thought provoking piece.

Unlike a horizontal-axis wind turbine, this one is supposed to be quieter and less hazardous to birds. As you can see from the table below, you need a pretty brisk wind to keep even one light bulb burning.

Secret Soviet plans for a lunar military
base

Secret Soviet plans for a lunar military
base
09/22/2004 06:16 AM
David Pescovitz: Thirty years ago, the Russian military allegedly developed plans to build a base on the Moon. According to MosNews, the Novaya Gazeta weekly got the story from the project-deputy general designer of the General Machine Building Design Bureau (KBOM) who was directly involved in the project.
"Soviet scientists considered the Moon to be a very good place for a strategic headquarters as nuclear strikes on its surface would lose most of their destructive force. As the moon has no atmosphere, no shockwave could spread there and the radioactive dust would immediately fall out back on the surface without an atmosphere to carry it.

The designer also said that the USA had also developed a lunar base project and the Soviet scientists had been aware of these plans."
The source, Aleksandr Yegorov, said the Soviet plan was scrapped because... (surprise!) it was too damn expensive. Link (to the MosNews article) Link (to a history of Russian lunar base programs)

Black market Soviet space program
detritus

Black market Soviet space program
detritus
03/28/2005 08:49 AM
Cory Doctorow: Russia's flea markets and online auction sites teem with stolen detritus of the Soviet space pragram. Wired has a good article with interviews with the dealers and buyers. The look and feel of commie space junque is completely awesome: there's a Russian science fiction publisher that finances its trips to American conventions by selling off thousands of kitschy Soviet space pins and memorabilia, stuff with the design feel of a Gernsback-era flying wing or phallic rocket-bomb. I can totally see how the actual detritus from the actual program would pose a nearly inescapable lure to a certain species of craphound.
I'm talking to a vendor named Vladimir, who, to protect himself from the bitter cold, has put on a pair of orange space gloves, which he swears belonged to Gagarin, and a bubble-shaped space helmet. A $2,000 price tag hangs off his right pinkie, and a $1,000 marker dangles from the helmet. Eager to make a sale, Vladimir lifts the face shield, revealing a set of bulging eyes and a two-day beard. "So," he says, speaking English with a heavy Russian accent to a tourist snapping a photo, "you wanna be a spaceman?"

Vladimir's stall is among hundreds that line Izmailovo's muddy pathways like a set of crooked teeth. Vendors hawk everything from pirated DVDs to antique rifles, just like any weekend market in the US. But Izmailovo's proximity to the famed cosmonaut training ground Star City - 90 minutes away by pothole-riddled streets - makes this bazaar unique. There are dozens of vendors peddling the same kind of wares as Vladimir. With a hand-rolled cigarette dangling from his mouth, he shows off artifacts that would be right at home in a museum clearance sale - an $800 leather headset, a $1,000 heat-resistant jumper with a Russian flag on the sleeve, and his prize, a $40,000 space suit from a 1971 Soyuz spacecraft.
