12/18/2003 12:59 AMWindows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), currently in Beta testing, includes
significant enhancements to the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF)
component, also known as the Windows Firewall. ICF is a stateful
firewall that discards unsolicited incoming traffic, providing a level
of protection for computers against malicious users or programs. To
provide better protection for computers connected to any kind of
network (such as the Internet, a home network, or an organization
network), Windows XP SP2 enables ICF on all network connections by
default. This new behavior can impair some types of communications.
This article describes how to deploy the appropriate configuration
settings for ICF on an organization network so that it is enabled and
providing protection and so that communications are not impaired.

Was Microsoft’s ad really misleading?
09/03/2004 04:51 AMBy now you’ve probably heard that the British Advertising Standards
Authority (ASA) called Microsoft on the carpet over its “Get the
Facts” advertising campaign touting the advantages of using Windows
servers over Linux hosts. Specifically, the ASA found one ad, in which
Microsoft claimed Linux was more expensive in the long run, to be
misleading.

Microsoft’s Sender ID blasted
08/27/2004 02:05 PMOpen saucers are beginning to suspect that Microsoft’s spam fighting
Sender ID might be a cunning plan to hamstring Linux. The folks at
Vole have managed to get a consensus among rivals for its Sender ID
which enables identification of the source of an email before it is
sent. However according to US mag PC Week, the licence for sender ID
might breach open source requirements and Linux developers would not
be able to use it.

Frustration Over Microsoft’s Security
Problems Grow
01/06/2004 10:41 AMMany I.T. people are simply fed-up with the constant stream of never
ending security problems using Microsoft's Windows products, adding
myself to an ever-growing list of frustrated computer professionals.
Upon returning from a ten-day vacation, and a single security patch
behind, seven out of eleven servers attached to a remote DSL network
were taken over by intruders. Granted I should have had a firewall in
front of these computers, but because of their functionality, I didn't
justify the expense. But still, am I to blame or should Microsoft be
held accountable?

64-bit Windows variants with a closer eye than most. We've seen
Windows XP 64-bit Edition progress from a barely functional core
operating system to the full-featured, release quality version which
we're looking at today. The applications and drivers appeared to be
solidifying, and Intel's recent announcement that their Xeon EMT64
processors would be compatible with the current builds of Microsoft's
64-bit Windows appeared as if it would be the final stepping stone
before this major operating system release.

Microsoft’s next move in the Windows
vs. Linux battle
09/17/2004 12:17 PMAre you convinced that Windows environments are less expensive to own
and operate than Linux computers? Martin Taylor, the manager behind
Microsoft’s anti-Linux strategy, believes the company’s Get The
Facts marketing campaign – along with a bunch of one-on-one meetings
with customers – has effectively muted the old argument that Linux
is cheaper than Windows just because the open-source OS can be
downloaded for free. Going forward, Taylor plans to put more emphasis
on how Windows compares to Linux when used for specific purposes, or
what he calls “scenario stacks.”

Microsoft’s Raikes ‘bl0gs’ own dog
food consumption, but sans RSS
04/15/2005 02:47 AMI was stunned to receive the notification from a Microsoft
spokesperson regarding "a new Office Online column from Jeff Raikes on
real-time collaboration," only to learn that there was no way for me
to subscribe to Raikes’?musings via RSS. Instead, I guess I’ll
have to remember to check Microsoft’s site on a regular basis for
anything new, or wait for the next e-mail.?How inefficient!
Speaking of efficiency, perhaps that’s the silver lining to this
cloud. Raikes’ note describes how Microsoft, being the large
international company that it is, has been a pretty good proving
ground for how its enterprise collaboration tools (Communicator, Live
Communications Server, and Live Meeting) can grease the wheels of
group productivity while saving the company money. Against a backdrop
of presence detection and management and context-sensitive
communications, Raikes says, "At Microsoft, we have more than 35,000
people using Live Communication Server-based IM and we send roughly
7.5 million instant messages per month." Using the financial returns
as another proof point, Raikes writes, "Live Meeting is used
extensively within Microsoft and it provided immediate returns. At
Microsoft in FY04, Live Meeting replaced 1 in 5 business trips and
saved the company over $40 million U.S.; in FY05, that savings is
expected to top $70 million."

Microsoft’s PUMA to prevent theft of
audio data
03/14/2005 05:46 PMAt the end of April at the WinHEC 2005 developers´ conference
Microsoft intends to furnish further details on the copy protection
functions of the successor to Windows XP Longhorn, which is planned
for 2006.
The preliminary WinHEC 2005 Master List of Tracks and Sessions under
the heading Media Advances for the Windows PC Architecture lists a
number of events dealing with the form of control of use known as
Digital Rights Management (DRM). One of these track sessions will, for
instance, be concerned with the Protected Media Path (PMP), which is
to be established for media data in Longhorn PCs. A Protected
Environment (PE), whilst providing a Protected Video Path (PVP) and
Protected User Mode Audio (PUMA), will enforce defined requirements on
hardware drivers (for TV or graphics cards, say). These channels are
to be proof against data theft by rogue software. PUMA runs in the PE,
with the PVP even encrypting data transfer to the graphics card over
the PCI Express Port (AES 128). A PC´s outlets - in the case of video
signals the outlet of the graphics card - are also integrated into the
output protection management concept (OPM). Here Microsoft mentions
known output protection schemes such as HDCP, Macrovision or CGMS-A,
but also speaks of artificial resolution constrictors. According to
Microsoft "significant hardware features must be implemented in
graphics chips for Windows Longhorn to support PVP and OPM, with
additional larger implications for the drivers." The longer term
project PAP is to introduce audio encryption all the way to the audio
codec chips.

A first look at Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO
edition
04/09/2004 04:04 PMVector Linux has always interested me because of its purpose and
origin: a simplified distribution from a Slackware base. Last month
Vector's developers announced the first release candidate for Vector
Linux 4.0 SOHO edition. Since, to quote Vector's main page, Slackware
Linux has always been "about as user-friendly as a coiled
rattlesnake," I was curious to see how Vector Linux addressed these
issues for home users while still keeping the Slackware reliability
and speed. I'm sorry to report that their efforts have not been
especially successful.
