Reading The Times' Circuits
section invariably causes a single metallic tear to vent from my
society-integration hardware, wetting my dome. Sometimes it's from the
cognitive trauma of trying to parse whether or not they're even
talking about technology anymore or just repurposing old articles from
the Steamer Tramp Watch column or something, but sometimes --
rare, precious times -- I get misty as I watch them discover something
for the first time, as a retarded child waking from a coma would
marvel at a flower, or toilet paper, fawning over and cuddling and
gleefully showing the new technology to us. This week's blissful
bursting into awareness? Motherfucking USB. Awwww. (Thanks
to the Circuits team's case worker, Jeff.)

Circuits: The Last Goodbye
Circuits: The Last Goodbye
03/24/2005 02:53 PM
I had intended to write some short note about the passing of
the New York Times' Circuits section, now set to be dismantled
and set to work throughout the paper like nerdy orphans. I was going
to write about my sadness at its departure, so quickly after a
crowed-about redesign, but before it had a chance to grow into the
accessible but technical resource it had the potential to become.
Instead, here is a picture of David Pogue crawling through his
backyard in a fur cap from an indeterminate animal source. If that was
good enough for his last piece in the Circuits section, then
it's good enough for my last mention of them. If you need a shoulder
to cry on, Circuits writers, I'm here for you, hatless.

05/13/2004 11:08 AMThe Times' Circuits section brings you the hottest news of last month

had any friends, I would definitely use it), and because I understand

05/19/2004 08:43 PMThe Times' Circuits section has a information-light profile of the
"iPod for Sheet Music", the MusicPad Pro Plus. Not a whole lot of new
poop if you've read about it before, but they do mention a couple of
competing systems, including one developed by Harry Connick Jr. (that
doesn't appear...

Holy shit.
I can only imagine the scene at the New York Times a few days ago,
as a team of Circuits section editors gathered around a table
in a room lit by only a single lamp, shining down at the stupefying
gadget known as... iPod.
Beads of sweat gathered on the brows and backfat of each one as
they gazed unflinchingly at the white devil, unable to unlock its
hermetic secrets; a group of men and women - elevated masters of the
occult tradition of tech journalism - their minds broken and laid bare
on the tiny aluminum altar that Apple had raised in their midst.
An intern slammed open the door, his silhouette framed by the light
from the rest of the Gray Lady's offices, pushing a wave of nauseating
synchronicity with the iPod's famous ad campaign into the room.
"Sirs, I've got dozens of great leads about technology being used
during the upcoming Republican National..." He was silenced by an
upturned palm from the Arch-Editor.
"You fool," gasped the AE, as he fell to one knee, black fluid
running from his ears, "Have you not heard? This iPod can play
music... at random."

Google Hacks is mentioned in an article titled
"Fishing for Information? Try Better Bait" in tomorrow's NYT
Circuits.
A new book, "Google Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips and Tools," by
Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest (O'Reilly & Associates), is the
latest resource in a growing industry to help people become better
online searchers. It catalogs ways to uncover nuggets of information.
Although a large part of the book is intended for programmers who
adapt Google's search services for their own Web sites, there is much
in it for everyday users.
Magic Ink Grows Metal Circuits
Magic Ink Grows Metal Circuits
07/06/2004 08:29 AM
UK Firm QinetiQ is using a
new technique to grow circuits that, besides being relatively cheap,
is also relatively friendly to the environment. In the process a
flexible surface, like plastic, is printed with a special ink, then
soaked in an electroless chemical solution, causing the metal to grow
on the ink. While they won't be growing silicon microprocessors any
time soon, QinetiQ plans to primarily focus on producing large batches
of RFID tags, although other technologies, like Frequency Selective
Surfaces, which can bounce some radio waves and let other through. The
real question is, as usual, when can we use this process at home?
