Remembering the French Laundry
03/28/2005 10:23 AMAges ago, I began the process of moving all my megnut.com entries into
a new version of Movable Type, a process I never completed. There are
still about seven months of entries from 2002 that never made the
transition, and sit only on my hard drive. One of those entries was my
tale of eating dinner at the French Laundry, and many people have
emailed asking why they can't find it on my site.
Well I'm happy to say I've reposted it: It's All About Finesse. All
the rest of the stuff is still missing, but for all those who've asked
for it, and for myself too, I've gotten it back online. I think it's
one of my favorite megnut posts of all time. Every time I re-read it,
it brings that magical evening rushing back. Hard to believe it was
almost three years ago!
Has my Keller devotion waned in that time, you ask? Hardly! I got the
Bouchon cookbook for Christmas and have already tried several of the
recipes. And not only that, but I've been practicing for a return to
one of Mr. Keller's kitchens by eating as much yummy food as possible,
including a recent superb outing to Gramercy Tavern in New York City.
My hope is to visit Per Se, Thomas' New York City outpost, later this
year. Belly -- and wallet -- beware!
Remembrance of the French Laundry Fund
Remembrance of the French Laundry Fund
06/05/2005 11:56 PMI received an email recently from Maurice Graham Henry, proprietor
of Dining In France who'd had dinner at Per Se recently and
wrote to share some incredible news.
I had dinner at Per Se last night, and I had the good
fortune to see Thomas Keller again.
He asked me anout my website
DininginFrance.com, and I told him that I was recentlay able to
recover a write up on The French Laundry (listed on my French Laundry page) on archive.org from
2002....written by 'the woman with the French Laundry Fund can'.
Thomas remembered immediately, but he never knew that either of you
had ever written about the experience. FYI Michael has been working
at Per Se since it was opened, and I told him also. He (saying to me,
"I tell people about that story all the time!) also never knew about
your web postings.
How amazing that they remember! And how cool that Michael is at Per
Se. I'm hoping to go there later this year, and perhaps I'll get to
have him as my waiter again!

My old neighbor from Toronto, Roger Wood, is an assemblage sculptor
who builds whimsical clocks out of old junk. He has a little mailing
list for fans of his where he posts photos of today's creation -- and
the latest edition really struck my fancy: a wheeled clock with a
pastel-tinted laundry line. Gorgeous.

Origami Folding Robot
Origami Folding Robot
12/15/2003 06:55 PMDevin Balkcom and Matt Mason, working at the
CMU Robotics Institute have
created the world's first origami folding robot. The
robot can fold a
variety of traditional origami shapes. While the shapes are simple,
the
interesting part is that the robot determines the sequences of moves
and
folds needed on its own. What have they learned from the exercise?
"For now, human hardware and software are superior:
human fingers are great tools for manipulating delicate paper, and
human intuition and intellect far outclass robotic planning
capabilities." Devin's website includes a Quicktime video of the

Sinclair's Folding A-Bike
Sinclair's Folding A-Bike
07/08/2004 08:44 AM
Sir Clive
Sinclair, inventor of the pocket calculator and the nigh-on-legendary
Sinclair personal computer, has unveiled a new, folding bicycle design
he's calling the 'A-Bike.' To be launched in 2005, the 12-pound bike
can be folded and unfolded in around 20 seconds and rides on tiny,
air-filled tires. The idea is (if it weren't obvious) to provide a
cheapish alternative to full-sized bikes that can be folded up and
taken with you wherever you go, although the $300 price is
considerable more than it would cost to purchase a capable, if basic,
street bicycle and chain. Still, I am intrigued. Portable urban
transportation is one of my new pet pastimes, and the A-bike would be
much easier to recharge than the electric scooters I've been eyeing
(they sell pizza almost everywhere). (Thanks, Tim!)

Shifting time and folding space
02/01/2005 08:52 PM
Yesterday I drove to a meeting in another state. On the way there and
back, my car radio was tuned to no regular broadcast but instead to
the pirate radio station in my briefcase. Its components: a $20 Belkin
FM transmitter, a $90 Creative Nomad MuVo MP3 player, and
do-it-yourself programming. As I drove to my destination, I listened
to Shai
Agassi's talk at the Accelerating Change Conference, courtesy of
ITConversations.com. On
the way back, I listened to an audio interview I'd done the day
before, reviewing which parts I might want to use in a podcast or
weave into an article.
When I got home, I dialed in to a conference call, fired up a WebEx
session, and conducted another interview -- in this case, one that
featured a demonstration of a software product. I made an audio/video
recording of that demo, and, as soon as I get a chance to edit it down
to the most interesting parts, I'll share it with you on my blog.
At the end of the day, it struck me that time-shifted content and
space-folding telepresence are becoming complementary.
...
Martin Geddes, who blogs thoughtfully at telepocalypse.net about
telecommunications and IT, recently asked an
important question: "How do telecom and transport substitute [for] or
complement one another?"
Geddes argues that although trillions of dollars ride on the answers,
we mostly don't have a clue. It's a fascinating essay that I won't try
to summarize, but one key point -- the distinction between "travel for
sense of presence" and "travel for information exchange" -- is
relevant here.
As Geddes notes, we're only now approaching the point at which telecom
can sustain credible telepresence. Last weekend, my DSL was upgraded
from 384Kbps to 3Mbps, and I can take it to 7Mbps if necessary. At
what point does the link carry enough emotional bandwidth to begin
displacing travel for sense of presence? I'm not holding my breath.
Apple's iChat AV was cool before, and it'll be cooler now, but it's
not going to replace face-to-face meetings any time soon.
Meanwhile, three megabits per second sure makes travel for information
exchange seem sillier than it already did. Coupled with podcasting, it
makes the two kinds of travel nicely complementary. The podcasting
model is partly based on the assumption that TiVo-izing your audio
content should be a scheduled process. Now that I can download hours
of audio in mere seconds, I just grab what I need on the fly.
Shifting time, folding space, juggling atoms and bits -- is this how
we want to live and work? Yes! [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
...Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike
Panasonic's Folding Electric Bike
03/23/2005 04:53 AM
Panasonic has introduced a "folding" electric
bicycle. Called the "Off Time," the bike can be folded to fit inside
of a car's trunk, go with you on the train, or stashed under your bed
for when you need to make a quick getaway. Its lithium-ion battery can
drive for about two and a half hours, but I presume that even if it
runs out, you can still pedal it like a normal bike.

06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.
