Nine Inch Nails Releases GarageBand
Music
04/16/2005 09:26 PM

Anyone using an Apple will have a special treat in store for them. Trent Reznor from the Nine Inch Nails has released the full-tracked GarageBand Format of their song, "The Hands That Feeds". This is a first as far as we know. Here is the info direct from Trent and you can download the song from MacMegaSite.

For quite some time I've been interested in the idea of allowing you the ability to tinker around with my tracks - to create remixes, experiment, embellish or destroy what's there. I tried a few years ago to do this in shockwave with very limited results.
After spending some quality time sitting in hotel rooms on a press tour, it dawned on me that the technology now exists and is already in the hands of some of you. I got to work experimenting and came up with something I think you'll enjoy.
What I'm giving you in this file is the actual multi-track audio session for "the hand that feeds" in GarageBand format. This is the entire thing bounced over from the actual Pro Tools session we recorded it into. I imported and converted the tracks into AppleLoop format so the size would be reasonable and the tempo flexible.
So...
You need a Macintosh and you need GarageBand 2.0. If you have a newer Mac, you already have the software. The more RAM you have the better. I did this on a PowerBook 1.67 w/ 2G RAM but it has been running on far less powerful systems.
Drag the file over to your hard disk and double click it. Hit the space bar. Listen.
Change the tempo. Add new loops. Chop up the vocals. Turn me into a woman. Replay the guitar. Anything you'd like.
I gave this to my crew and band to test out and all work effectively stopped for a while - it's fun to mess around with. I've now heard a country version of the track as well as an abstract Latin interpretation (thanks, Leo).
There are some copyright issues involved, so read the notice that pops up. Giving this away is an experiment. I'm interested to see what comes of it, what issues are raised and what the results are.
Have fun-
Trent Reznor

Fading Ways Music, an indie record label based out of Toronto, announced their 2004 releases will be sold under Creative Commons Attribution-N oncommercial-ShareAlike licenses. Fading Ways Music is the first internationally-distributed label to adopt Creative Commons licensing for its new physical CD releases. Fading Ways articulates its philosophy for open-licenses nicely on its mission page. Neil Leyton, the label's manager, makes a great quote here: "Music Publishing as a concept is wrong. No one creates songs out of thin air."

Fading Ways joins other labels, such as Opsound, Magnatune, and Loca Records that embrace Creative Commons licenses, enabling fans to rip, mix, and burn their favorite tunes without legal doubt.

Warner Music Tries (And Fails) To Make
Friends With Music Bloggers
08/16/2004 06:48 AM
MP3 blogs have been getting a lot of attention lately. The blogs, which usually focus on certain genres of music with the idea to highlight or expose certain new or obscure acts to a wider audience are growing in popularity. They often post an entire MP3 as well. However, it appears that some of the attention directed at these blogs made it to some executives at Warner Brothers Records. In a moment of enlightenment (considering typical record company reaction), instead of trying to shut these sites down, they decided to see what would happen if they embraced them. Someone from Warner contacted a number of these blogs, including an MP3 from a band they wanted to promote. This is somewhat surprising, as many of the sites certainly expected to get sued before they received MP3s from a major label. Still, the effort had its problems. The musician had already been featured months ago on some of the sites, and didn't fit at all with the focus of some of the other sites. Plus, the fear of looking like record company lackeys didn't appeal to many of the sites. Even worse, though, was that on the one site that did post the tracks, a number of out-of-place comments began appearing talking about how "awesome" the band was. A quick check of the IP addresses of the posters, though, showed they came from... Warner Brothers. So, while it's really great that they're actually trying to embrace these sorts of promotions, they still need to learn a thing or two about dealing with bloggers. Still, it's clearly a step forward from an industry that hasn't made many steps in that direction recently.

  • NY Post: Apple Tunes Up. Under the terms of some of the deals, the prices for some of the most popular singles could rise to $1.25, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. Songs have previously been priced at 99 cents across the board.
  • And, apparently, album prices will rise even higher than the CDs cost in stores. Now there's a way to encourage buyers. Let's see. Charging more on a medium where the manufacturing costs are zero -- now that's a way to encourage sales. Brilliant.

MSN Music: Microsoft Flexes Music Muscle

MSN Music: Microsoft Flexes Music Muscle 09/03/2004 10:36 AM
Xeni Jardin: In Wired News today, a report I filed on Microsoft's new music download service:
A help page on the beta site provides instructions describing how users can enable MSN Music downloads to play on their iPods.Microsoft's recent criticism of Apple for not licensing iPod functionality to third-party tech companies is not without irony, given past accusations of anticompetitive behavior that resulted in Microsoft agreeing last year to pay out $1.8 billion to settle consumer antitrust suits. Just last Friday, six California municipalities sued Microsoft over claims it overcharged government customers because of its effective monopoly in computer operating systems.

The company's new war against iTunes and the iPod is seen by some industry watchers as not unlike its earlier war for market share against the Netscape browser -- which Internet Explorer won. In light of the fact that Microsoft claims its MSN hub attracts more than 350 million monthly unique users, sheer reach -- rather than product feature details -- may ultimately determine who wins this war.

Open-format activists like Jason Schultz, a staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, ask why the company doesn't simply strip DRM altogether, and lament the fact that Microsoft's service launch makes it all the more likely that two opposing proprietary systems -- Microsoft's and Apple's -- will now dominate a marketplace some feel would be better served by open standards such as MP3.

"Microsoft's music launch is just the latest effort to 'bring music to the masses' by, ironically, setting up a new, separate, incompatible DRM fiefdom," said Schultz. "The thing people love about the internet is that you can send e-mail to anyone in the world with any e-mail client. In the digital music world, however, we're seeing an increasing trend toward technological balkanization.

Link to story, and Link to MSN Music. More of Jason Schultz's comments on the service launch are here.
