Presshttp://firstmonda

Author:This is a call for a "Grand Challenge" project
for achieving truly global connectivity. For over a decade, we have
hypothesized that the Internet could raise the quality of life in
developing nations. We have conducted hundreds of studies of the state
of the Internet and "e–readiness," done extensive training of
technicians and policy makers, run pilot studies, and held local,
regional and global conferences and workshops. After all of this
activity, Internet connectivity is nearly non–existent in rural
areas of developing nations, and far below that of developed nations
in the urban areas of developing nations. This is not to say the
activity of the past decade has been a waste. We have demonstrated the
value of the Internet and raised awareness. The United Nations and the
administrations of nearly all nations have acknowledged the potential
of the Internet. The way has been paved, and it is time to act on what
we have learned.
After outlining the work of the last
decade, we explore one possible Grand Challenge: Connecting every
village in the rural developing world to the Internet using a strategy
similar to that used in building the NSFNet. We speculate on wireless
technologies that might play a role in working toward that goal:
Terrestrial, high–altitude platform, and satellite. We conclude with
a brief discussion of alternative Grand Challenges and a call for
action. The time is ripe for an audacious project. What could we
achieve with US$15 billion and ten years time?

Internethttp://partners.nytimes.com/2003/12/15/technology/15divide.htmlThe delegates at a U.N. conference on the Internet have
decided that a "working group" should be set up to consider
introducing more international oversight of the Internet and its
administrative bodies (such as ICANN, the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers, a company that has a U.S. Commerce
Department contract to coordinates Internet addresses and some other
technical issues). At the conference, delegates from the developing
countries were unsuccessful in getting the U.N. to take full
administrative control of the Internet, although they did get a
promise that ways will be explored to close the "digital divide"
between richer and poorer nations. Eli M. Noam, who heads the
Institute for Tele-Information at Columbia University, notes: "Even if
it is not true, there is a perception that the U.S. government is
running the Internet."

Arrival in a Narrow Country
Arrival in a Narrow Country
02/10/2004 02:44 AMFlew from Miami to Panama City, Panama yesterday. While
sitting in a comfortable leather seat aboard an American Airlines 757
and eating a filet mignon lunch, I looked down at Cuba.Supposedly they
have everything to which we Americans aspire, i.e., universal health
care and an excellent public education system. Yet Cubans are
dirt poor and it is we ignorant and infirm residents of the United
States who designed and built the 757. The comparison isn't
quite fair but really you'd think that the Cubans, being so well
educated and blessed with a large and fertile country, would have done
better for themselves. Perhaps politics do matter, a sobering
thought as Election 2004 sweeps across the U.S.
Graham, a Kiwi flight instructor from www.helipan.com, picked me up at the
big international airport here (PTY) and, after a brief stop to change
into shorts, we went to the small domestic airport and preflighted a
Robinson R22 helicopter, removed the doors, and, with the Pacific
Ocean at our backs, took off north along the Canal. A moderate
rain, unseasonable this time of year in Panama, pelted my bare skin
though the gaping holes in the sides of the machine, now approaching
its 100 mph (160 kph) cruising speed. Soon the rain ended,
however, and we were abeam the magnificent Miraflores Locks. After
skirting the airspace over a prison and a rainforest resort we dropped
down to 500' over the jungle bordering Lake Gatun, the heart of the
Panama Canal. A few minutes later we were coming up on Colon,
the big city and free trade zone at the Caribbean end of the Canal.
After a quick glance down at the collapsed rusting rooftops of
downtown Colon it is not hard to believe that this is the
unemployment, poverty, and crime capital of the nation.
"... children run about in rags and the city's largely
black
population lives in rotting buildings. ... If you walk
its streets,
even in th emiddle of the day, expect to get
mugged. It really is
that bad."
-- Lonely Planet guidebook (this is a publisher that thinks
Columbia is a nice safe country to visit!)
Cruising at 80 mph west from Colon, 50' above the breakers, we
reached the mouth of the Rio Chagres, whose prodigious flow in the
rainy season stymied the Canal builders. This is the river that
the pirate Henry Morgan used in 1671 to gain access to the original
settlement of Panama City. On the cliffs above the sea is the
ruined Fuerte San Lorenzo, built to protect the Spanish gold trade
from guys like Henry Morgan. Adjacent to the fort is a partially
fenced grassy area. Graham decided to put the R22 down there. We
walked around the fort for a bit, looked at the rusty cannon, and then
fired up for the return trip to Panama City, landing just at
sunset.
Then it was back to the hotel for a shorts-and-T-shirt dinner at a
table outdoors, on a patio overlooking Canal-bound ships going
underneath the Puente de las Americas. The helicopter pilots
talked about their jobs on the tuna boats here. The 200'-long
tuna boats carry a light helicopter so that the captain can go up and
coordinate the action of little speed boats that collect the
nets. When the work is done the pilot has to land on a rolling
metal deck, often spread with a net to provide friction. "Sounds
like landing on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier," I observed. "Oh,
it is much harder than that," the pilots noted. "Remember that
this is a very small ship and it goes up and down with the waves
a lot more." Tuna boat helicopter pilots tend to be young and
unmarried.

Differences between WorldCon and DNC
07/16/2004 05:17 AMThis year's World Science Fiction Convention is in Boston, and
accordingly, the URL for the con is boston2004.com. By a funny
coincidence, the Democratic National Convention is
also in
Boston, and its URL is boston04.com. The inevitable confusion is quite
humorous -- the organisers of the WorldCon have compiled a list of
ways in which the WorldCon is unlike the DNC:
# We're not $10 million over budget. We don't even have a $10 million
budget.
# Our promises for the future are supposed to be fiction.
# You don't have to donate thousands of dollars to us (though we
wouldn't complain)—we'll give you a high-level appointment to
work for us for free!
# The media will not outnumber the attendees.
# Thoats and banthas are more interesting animals than donkeys and
elephants.
# The folks wandering around with walkie-talkies are likely to be
helpful and friendly.
# The slogans on our buttons are actually funny, and many of them are
about cats.
# No one will be kissing babies except their immediate families and
friends.
# When we talk about "skull and bones" it's probably in a discussion
about paleontology.
# When we sling mud, it's probably in a workshop on making alien
pottery.

05/26/2004 03:24 PMThe bias charges are getting more serious lately as the stakes rise in
Iraq and the election. The press has every reason to keep reporting
aggressively on the investigation of Abu Ghraib. But there is
something lacking in press coverage, and it may be time for wise
journalists to assess it. The re-building story has gone missing.
And without it, how can we judge the job Bush is doing?

12/31/2004 10:59 AMOn Malik likes
his. I wonder if I can trade out my 7610 for a 6630? Charlie?
Here's
Om's post....
It is hard for me to imagine that I am carrying around in my
pocket a computer that is as powerful as my first generation Pentium
powered AST desktop, I wrestled with back in 1995, typing out
scintiallting stories about memory chip prices for Quick Nikkei News.
It seemed breezy enough, running the now forgotten Windows 3.1. With
some kicking around, the TCP/IP stack on it worked for me to get
Internet access as well. Fast forward by ten years, and the new Nokia 6630
packs a mightier punch - a 200 MHz ARM 5 processor - in a small
but lethal package.
The Nokia 6630 is based
on Symbian OS. It is a tri-band phone for GSM 900/1800/1900, EDGE and
WCDMA networks. Weighing 127 grams and measuring 110 x 60 x 20.6 mm,
it is world’s smallest megapixel phone for GSM and WCDMA networks.
It has everything you would normally want in a good smart-enough
phone. Clearly, this is the best 3G phone on the market, especially
given that how the others are so clunky and well ugly! It is light
enough that sometimes I forget it is sitting in my pocket.

Looks like T-Mobile Germany is getting the Nokia 6630 (or
else they made a bad choice in stock photography in this marketing

T-Mobile will carry it in the US? My guess would be no, since the
whole point of the 6630 is that it works on high-speed 3G networks -
something T-Mobile USA doesn't really have. (Thanks,

03/14/2005 06:10 PMATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media
products, today announced that it is in mass production of high
capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV)
feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the
conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices.
The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption,
meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrows mobile
digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available
immediately, with 512MB available in March. [PRWEB Feb 20, 2005]

Okay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us,
and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have
to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design -
the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have
a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release
a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?
Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post
in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which
you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed
it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

01/01/2004 02:38 PMSina Ahmadian points us to the
FarsiWeb Project, and corrects my
sloppy references to lanugage in Iran on recent posts (
1,
2) about blogosphere reaction to the Bam earthquake (now said to
have taken 50,000 lives):
I noticed that you have used the word "Farsi" (instead of
"Persian") as English equivalent of our language in your web site. I
would like to point out that FARSI (which is originally PARSI) is the
native name of our language and PERSIAN is its English equivalent; as
the native name of German language is 'Deutsch', but we never use
'Deutsch' in place of 'German' in English; or native term of Greek
Language is "Ellinika" and always in English we say 'Greek' language,
not 'Ellinika' language.
The titles of dictionaries written by several great Persian scholars
(eg. Prof. Moein, Prof. Aryanpour, Prof. Baateni,
etc.) are "English-Persian Dictionary" not "English-Farsi Dictionary".
And the official institution "Farhangestan" (the Academy of Persian
language and literature, in Tehran) in an announcement has rejected
the use of the word 'Farsi' instead of 'Persian' in English.
According to Dr. Hossein Sameie (visiting linguistics professor of
Emory University in Atlanta), "PERSIAN, alongside the name of a
language, may be used, as an adjective, for the other aspects of our
history and culture. For example, we can speak about 'Persian
Literature', 'Persian Gulf', 'Persian Carpet', 'Persian Food'; this
way, 'Persian' may be a common concept and function as a link between
all aspects of Iranian [Persian] life, including language. 'Farsi'
does not have such a characteristic..." And finally, all international
brocasting centres (eg. BBC, VOA, DW, etc.) have "Persian Service"
not "Farsi Service" -- BBC, VOA, DW, Radio Free Europe,
etc.
Thank you, Sina!
