Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again

Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again

Microsoft Takes Aim At Intuit Again 12/06/2003 04:30 PM

Microsoft is hoping Magellan can take it where Microsoft Profit and bCentral Finance Manager could not. The destination? Small business accounting, a market dominated by Intuit's QuickBooks.

After several failed attempts, the software giant will once again make a foray into small business accounting with a project code-named Magellan, sources said. Details are sketchy. A Microsoft spokeswoman confirmed the code name, and said the company continues to investigate the best ways to serve small businesses, but that it is too early to talk product plans.

It's a modern-day David and Goliath story for the business world: a company dreamed up at a kitchen table, built on explosive PC growth, and forced to battle a giant in the race to revolutionize an industry. This is the story of Intuit, creator of renowned software products like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax-the company that beat mighty Microsoft and changed the way 25 million people manage their finances. Written by Intuit veteran Suzanne Taylor and seasoned business manager Kathy Schroeder-who were granted exclusive interviews with founder Scott Cook and other key figures- Inside Intuit tells this company's original and fascinating tale for the first time. The book vividly recounts each dramatic stage of Intuit's development: from initial conception to "bet the company" investments; from strokes of marketing genius to disastrous product launches; and from battles for survival to successive victories against arch-rival Microsoft-the company no one else could beat.

Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft

Microsoft Takes On MikeRoweSoft 01/19/2004 01:44 AM
I'm surprised this one hasn't gotten more attention yet (though, it probably will). A kid in Canada named Mike Rowe needed a name for his website design business, and picked the somewhat obvious choice: MikeRoweSoft.com. The legal folks at a company you might have heard of, Microsoft, didn't take too kindly to that, and sent the typical threatening legal letter. They offered Mr. Rowe a whopping $10 for the domain. He wrote back saying $10,000 seemed more appropriate - and now Microsoft is accusing him of holding the domain hostage to try to get money out of Microsoft. I read the story a few times before I actually believed it. Even the name of the Microsoft law firm involved in this case (Smart & Biggar) made me wonder if it's all a big hoax - but it all seems real enough. Before the legal beagles chip in with the point that Microsoft needs to do this to protect their trademark, I'll respond by saying that this should be a perfect example of why that rule doesn't make much sense. How many people are actually going to confuse MikeRoweSoft with Microsoft? If anything, Mr. Rowe is going to have more trouble getting people to remember what his domain name is - as he's going to need to spell it out to everyone. However, as a publicity stunt for Mr. Rowe's web design business, this is probably going to help him out quite a bit.

12/19/2004 03:46 PM
Last week I was talking with a small business IT consultant who switches clients' servers to Linux (and Samba) all day long without any problems, but finds few clients interested in moving their desktops to Linux. The reason? "QuickBooks," he said. While there are many small business accounting packages that happily run on Linux, including GnuCash, Quasar, SQL-Ledger, and AccPac, QuickBooks dominates this market. And its loyal users don't want to switch to another package even if it's just as good as -- or possibly better than -- QuickBooks.

In Brief: Microsoft to release Office
Small Business Accounting
04/06/2005 12:06 PM
Microsoft in September plans to release Office Small Business Accounting, a new product designed to help small businesses operate better, taking on Intuit, Best Software, and others. Microsoft will sell Office Small Business Accounting as a stand-alone product and as part of a new Office bundle called Office Small Business Management Edition. The new Office bundle will include the familiar Office 2003 applications along with an updated version of Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager, Microsoft has said. Pricing has not yet been disclosed. With the new product, small businesses will be able to manage customer, financial, and business processes, according to Microsoft. Payroll functionality is offered through integration with services from outsourced payroll services provider Automatic Data Processing. Office Small Business Accounting is currently available in a beta test version. Office Small Business Accounting will be available in the U.S. first, with other countries set to follow about a year-and-a-half after the U.S. release.

Targeted for H1 2006

Microsoft Small Business Accounting
Targeted for H1 2006
02/05/2005 09:45 PM
According to Karan Khanna, product manager for Microsoft's forthcoming Small Business Accounting (now in beta testing), Microsoft is aiming for a release of the platform in the first half of 2006. Microsoft had previously announced product availability in late 2005. From the transcript of The .NET Show featuring SBA:

"ROBERT HESS: Now Christin mentioned that we were in the beta phase right now in this application. When does it actually come out into the market for real?

KARAN KHANNA: The plan is in the first half of next year you would have the application available. But it's in beta right now. "

The application, targeting small (1-25) businesses, is currently in <A href="http://blog.sagetechnology.com/techsage/archive/2004/11/06/ 248.aspx" target=_blank>beta testing</A>.  An <A href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/isv/technology/sba" target=_blank>SDK</A> for ISVs should be available soon and those interested should visit the <A href="http://msdn.microsoft.com/isv/technology/sba" target=_blank>ISV Community Center for SBA</A>.  The .NET Show episode includes demos of development with the SDK as well as code samples.  Other exciting news for developers is that, because user security for SBA is built into the SQL database (MSDE is supported), the platform will allow direct access to the database from third party applications or even end users'  - import/analyze via SQL ODBC in spreadsheets, for example.

Approach to Financial Management and

09/21/2004 08:41 AM
Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.
