SkyPort Fiber Optic Skylight System

SkyPort Fiber Optic Skylight System 04/18/2005 10:04 AM

skyport_luminaries.jpgDirect from Sweden, Parans shows off their Skyport system: light-collecting panels which you install on your roof, allowing them to feed a remote part of your house with the purest of natural light. The Skyport system uses SunWire—"light transporting cable" (read: fiber optics)—to bring sunlight to its connected "luminaries". Björks, as they're called, are specially designed to generate a light output of up to 4,000 lux, presumably on a clear day. The SunWire allows for you to distribute sunlight up to three stories down into a building and the Björks come in three different shapes, letting you maximize light output for a particular room's layout. Pricing and availability are heretofore a mystery, so you'll have to wait for now.

The Science Learning Network (SLN) is an online community of educators, students, schools, science museums and other institutions demonstrating a new model for inquiry science education. The SLN has recently expanded to include international members, outside of the framework of the original SLN project. These new museums are collaborating with the six founding SLN museums to create new resources for the SLN website. SLN originated as a three-year, $6.5M project funded by the National Science Foundation and Unisys Corporation. The project incorporates inquiry-based teaching approaches, telecomputing, collaboration among geographically dispersed teachers and classrooms, and Internet/World Wide Web content resources. This will be added to Education and Distance Learning Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

The overall aim of the Science and Development Network (SciDev.Net) is to enhance the provision of reliable and authoritative information on science- and technology-related issues that impact on the economic and social development of developing countries.
Our goal is to ensure that both individuals and organisations in the developing world are better placed to make informed decisions on these issues. We seek to achieve this objective primarily through running a free-access website, but also by building regional networks of individuals and institutions who share our goals, and by organising capacity-building workshops and other events in the developing world.

http://starnet.rta.nato.int/
In order to cope with the vast diversity and tremendous amount of information available within the NATO community and the NATO nations, the RTA Information Management Committee (IMC) is developing a science, technology and research network (STARnet). This network brings together common information elements in terms of science, technology and overall research, by providing a virtual library with special emphasis on topics of collective international security within the NATO area of interest. STARnet is designed as a system that can be adapted to address specific information needs as they arise within the NATO community. For example, the recent past has demonstrated a heightened awareness toward global terrorism. The need for information on this subject has warranted a development phase for STARnet in which a Defense Against Terrorism node has been added.

Compound Eyes and Optic Flow

Compound Eyes and Optic Flow 01/16/2004 11:01 AM
A new Wired article talks about the increasing interest among researchers in optic flow as a solution for UAV vision. Optic flow is the method by which insects with compound eyes, such as Dragonflies, perceive the world. It allows creatures with tiny brains and low resolution eyes to gather enough information quickly to perform highly accurate navigation even in complex environments. It's worth noting that optic flow has been a topic of interest among neural net and software researchers for decades.
