inaccur

on your own Hiptop. But it's still a problem that only
T-Mobile-approved apps can be downloaded. It's increasingly clear that
the cellular industry needs to be vertically disintegrated just like
wired telcos and ISPs. People also need to learn that "unlimited"
plans are part of the problem since they incentivize carries to screw
with their customers to limit network usage. I'd much prefer an
uncensored pay-per-bit plan (or Paris Metro Pricing).

Cory Doctorow:
The CEO of Danger, Inc., makers of the Hiptop wireless PDA-thingy, has
done an embarassingly rotten interview with Engadget, in which he
admits that his company is selling out its customers and locking down
development for the platform. Last year, I wrote a
public apology to everyone that I recommended this device to,
because I'd been fooled by a presentation given by Danger at a PC
Forum conference where they made a bunch of now-broken promises about
the openness of the Sidekick. A year later, we have more broken
promises and a device with even worse policies. My Sony-Ericsson P900
has many failings, but at least I can install my own ringtones and
software without having to go through the company's politburo to get
authorization.
Can customers upload their own ringtones?
No. There’s an effort by the industry to make people pay for the
content on these devices...
What about allowing developers to create user-installable applications
for the Sidekick?
Not user-installable. We’re a gatekeeper in that sense. they use
our developer kit, they reach an agreement with us, and then through
us they can have access to our user base.

A bit of interesting chim
cham from one Mr. Brahe, of One
Internet Lane: Apparently, while futzing around with the new
Sidekick II in San Diego, he happened to pick up on an important
difference between the old model and the new: While user-submitted
programs for the first Sidekick had to be approved by T-Mobile
(something they were seemingly reticent to do, like, ever), Danger,
creator of the Sidekick (nee Hiptop) have wrested control of
user-submitted applications back, making one critical difference
between versions: the new model will likely have more of what people
really want: applications.
Of course, one Internet Semistar does not a source make, but if
we'll follow up with Danger and see what we can find out.

Virtual Stuntmen Fear No Danger
Virtual Stuntmen Fear No Danger
01/08/2004 08:43 PMIf you've been to the movies lately, part of the MPAA's ad campaign
against movie piracy has a movie stuntman talking about how all those
evil movie pirates are going to put him out of a job. Considering
that the movie industry is doing better than ever, he's pissed off at
the wrong people. Wired Magazine is running a story about
a
company that makes virtual stuntmen that learn their actions
through computerized evolution. The characters keep learning and
trying new things, until users feel that it's done the action
properly, and can then put it into a movie or a video game. The
technology made its big debut in the latest
Return of the King,
the final chapter of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. While digital
animation in movies is nothing new, usually it relies on having an
actor wrapped up in motion sensors to capture their motions, and then
has the computer take over. That works fine for some things, but it's
tough to find anyone willing to be the motion capture subject for
dangerous things like being thrown by a huge animal in a battle, or
being tackled in a soccer game. Thus, those elements are usually
poorly done. However, with this software, you can model a real
human's actions, and keep having the system iterate until it does an
action that appears a lot more real than computer animators just
trying to fake it.

One of the finest poets in English, Thom
Gunn, has died. Along with
Philip Larkin and

became famous as a
young poet in England in the 1950s as part of
"The Movement," writing
f

American soldier, Mike Kitay, and followed him to San Francisco, where
he crafted one of the most daringly original voices in the 20th
century, handling taboo subjects like LSD, orgiastic sex, and his
50-year
relationship with Kitay with the precision of a diamond cutter.
Gunn lived in my neighborhood, and was a dapper, subtle, sexy and
hilariously witty man until the end. Ten years ago, when I asked him
what music he was listening to he replied, "Oh, Nirvana and
Social Distortion. I'm a flighty teenager that way."

Hilarious story (several weeks old, sorry -- been traveling) about an
experiment in which a San Francisco Bay Area 5th grade class listens
to Radiohead, then draws what they hear. Some of the resulting images
look like they could pass for actual Radiohead album covers. Snip:
"We will play a career-spanning selection of Radiohead songs; the
kids, equipped with Sharpies and blank sheets of paper, will simply
draw whatever the music suggests to them. We don't even give them the
name of the band. They don't know anything about Radiohead, the
mountain of criticism, the mythology. Their thoughts and
interpretations are pure, unsullied, literally unique.
They are also extremely bizarre. The kids consent to this experiment,
if only because [teacher] Mitsi [Kato] tells them to. They do,
however, immediately request that we play Sean Paul or 50 Cent
instead. 'This is not hip-hop,' Mitsi says. 'I'm not asking if you
like it.' She doesn't have to ask. They don't. "
